I just can’t thank everybody enough. We had an awesome day today and it’s all about my team, I’m just steering the wheel. Ford Performance has been a big help this year. We’ve used a lot of their tools to come here with and I think we’ll have a great car to come back with.”

Cole Custer, Driver Q&A

Some of your best finishes in your XFINITY Series career have been at 1.5-mile tracks. Why is that?

“I think we’ve unloaded some great cars at the 1.5-mile tracks, which seems to be our strong suit this year. The team has given me some great Haas Automation Ford Mustangs that have helped me adapt to the track faster than I normally would. The team has done a great job with the cars and it has given me the opportunity to race up front.”

What is a lap around Charlotte Motor Speedway like?

“I would say it’s a really edgy racetrack. Age-wise, it’s in the middle of a grippy track and a really worn-out track. It has a lot of tiny, high-speed bumps throughout the track that will upset the car. It’s a really challenging place to get around. Honestly, it’s one of the most difficult tracks I’ve been to. You have to hit your lines and your marks just right, but it’s a fun track.”

What are your thoughts on racing at Charlotte?

“Coming back to Charlotte is pretty important because you have all of the shop members around and all of their families and friends. It’s an important race for everybody and everyone wants to step their game up to win here. On the other hand, you may have a few more distractions being home with family all around, but it’s great having all of your friends around at the race.”

Jeff Meendering, Crew Chief Q&A

You were raised in Concord, North Carolina, just a few miles from Charlotte Motor Speedway. Tell us about your background in racing.

“I started racing at the Concord Motorsports Park when I was 16 years old in the Street Stock division. I raced that division for a few years, then moved up to the Super Late Model division and ran that for about 10 years.”

What are your thoughts on racing at Charlotte?

“I’ve attended every race at Charlotte for as long as I can remember. For that reason alone, it makes the track special to me – the fact that I can sleep in my own bed over the race weekend is just a bonus. We are bringing the car that we were running well with in California before getting wrecked. Our fabrication shop hung a new Mustang body on it and I feel like it’s the best Haas Automation Ford in our fleet. We had a good test in Charlotte at the beginning of the month so, going in, I feel really good about the weekend.”

How was today’s race at Richmond?

COLE CUSTER – 2017 Richmond I NXS Advance

Event: Richmond 250 (Round 8 of 33)
Date: April 29, 2017
Location: Richmond (Va.) International Raceway
Layout: .75-mile oval

Cole Custer Notes of Interest

  • The Richmond 250 will mark Custer’s fourth race at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway and his second NASCAR XFINITY Series race at the .75-mile oval. In his first XFINITY Series start at Richmond, Custer claimed his first XFINITY Series top-10 (April 23, 2016).
  • Custer is no stranger to victory lane at Richmond. In 2014, he took the checkered flag after leading 52 laps in the K&N Pro Series East race. In Custer’s three combined starts in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East (two races) and NASCAR XFINITY Series (one race) at Richmond, Custer has a win, two top-five finishes, three top-10s and 76 laps led.
  • The Richmond 250 is the third of four Dash 4 Cash races on the 2017 XFINITY Series schedule. This means drivers will race for a $100,000 cash bonus. Each of the top-two full-time XFINITY Series drivers from Stage 1 and Stage 2 will become Dash 4 Cash-eligible in the final stage.
  • As a Dash 4 Cash race, no full-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series drivers with five or more years of experience are entered in the Richmond 250. This means the only NASCAR Cup Series drivers competing in the Richmond 250 are Austin Dillon, Ty Dillon, Daniel Suarez, Ryan Blaney and Kyle Larson. This is designed to give regular XFINITY Series drivers a better chance to win.
  • Last week at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway, Custer placed in the top-two in Stage 1, giving him a shot at the $100,000 Dash 4 Cash bonus for the first time this season. In the final stage, he ran as high as third before being collected in an accident with only 38 laps to go, ending his race.
  • Custer participated in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) event at Richmond on Thursday, where he taught nearly 500 Central Virginia eighth-grade students the science behind racing. As a freshman student at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Custer is an education advocate.
  • Custer is 12th in the XFINITY Series championship standings, 130 points behind series leader Elliot Sadler.
  • Custer is third in the XFINITY Series Rookie of the Year standings, 30 points behind leader William Byron and 13 points behind second-place Daniel Hemric.

Cole Custer, Driver Q&A

You have a win, two top-fives and three top-10s at Richmond. What will it take to get your second win at Richmond?

“Richmond is a tough place because you’re just slipping and sliding the whole time, so I think you’ll definitely need a car that can be good on a long run to win there. It’s a really smooth track, but you just slide around like you’re on ice. It makes it really fun and challenging.”

This is your third Dash 4 Cash race. How does that play into your race strategy? Do you focus on the big check or the win?

“I’d say you still go for the overall win because that’s what gets you into the playoffs. All of us will definitely be racing hard to get in the Dash 4 Cash spots and win all that money but, right now, the points are more important.”

You’ve been highly involved in education and bringing more focus to younger fans this year. What is the importance of encouraging younger fans to get an education and learn about racing?

“It’s awesome to teach kids about the science behind racing because it can directly relate to what they learn in school. Learning the science side of racing can make it more interesting, too. Kids are the future of this sport, so it’s important to teach them more about racing.”

So far this season your finishes at Daytona, Phoenix, Fontana and Bristol have not been indicative of how well you’ve run. How confident are you knowing that your Haas Automation crew can put together such a fast Ford Mustang week after week?

“I’m bringing a lot of confidence to Richmond because our team has built such fast Ford Mustangs each week. I feel like we’re really getting our short-track package together. I’m confident our Haas Automation team will be strong again this week.”

Jeff Meendering, Crew Chief Q&A

What are your thoughts on racing at Richmond?

“I’m excited to go to Richmond. Cole had a good run there last year in the XFINITY race and I’ve been on several different teams that have had good runs at that track. Richmond takes a similar setup to Phoenix, where we were in line to have a good finish until we were involved in an accident toward the end of the race.”

Knowing that the Haas Automation crew has put together a strong car every week but has been involved in unfavorable circumstances, what will it take to get a solid finish at Richmond?

“I don’t think we need to change anything we’re doing. If we keep unloading fast cars off the truck every week, we will start getting the finishes this team and Cole deserve.”

Cole Custer, driver of the No. 00 Haas Automation Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing:

Strong race, and the finish is not indicative of how you ran. How do you feel about your overall performance today?

“We had a really fast Haas Automation Ford Mustang and we were going forward. I think we could’ve definitely won the Dash 4 Cash and maybe had a shot at the win. It just sucks. We’ve had a couple instances like this and it’s like we just can’t do anything about it this year. We’ll move on. We’ve got fast cars and we’ll try to get some solid finishes.”

Next Up:

The next event on the NASCAR XFINITY Series schedule is the Richmond 250 on Saturday, April 29 at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway. The race starts at 1 p.m. EDT with live coverage provided by FS1.

Cole Custer, driver of the No. 00 Haas Automation Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing:

How do you feel about your season-best performance at Texas Motor Speedway?
“We had an awesome Haas Automation Ford Mustang, we just had to buy our time. We kept getting stuck on the outside on the restarts and had to wait and wait until we got track position on the bottom. We had a really strong run. I can’t thank everybody enough who made this happen. I feel like I am getting more and more comfortable as I get experience and used to racing everybody. We are making strides, both me and the team.”

What kind of momentum will this give you going forward?
“I think it will be really important for us. We had pretty solid cars the last couple weeks and even at Atlanta we had a good car. We just haven’t been able to finish well until today. It was me making mistakes and just having random things happen. If we can keep these solid runs going we will work our way back up in the points. I feel like we can do this. We have had fast cars the last couple of weeks. We will just keep plugging away at it.”

How was it running with the Cup guys out there?
“You definitely learn a lot from them. It makes me want to push myself more. I have known we’ve had pretty fast cars and could compete with them, so I wasn’t overly shocked that we were up there. It was definitely a really good run that we needed with what has happened over the last couple of weeks.”

We were okay after the crash but for the second time out and six weeks in and everything that we have going on, putting both cars in the top-five is a huge day for us. Everybody on our Hunt Brothers Pizza team is doing a good job. We know we have some areas to work on to be better. Hopefully we can continue to do that and come back to Charlotte.”

Cole Custer, Driver Q&A

What are your thoughts on racing at Texas Motor Speedway?
“I’m excited. It’s a new surface that no one has run on, so it’s going to be a new challenge. It evens the playing field a bit. I think our team has shown a lot of speed in the last couple of weeks, so I think we’ll have a strong Haas Automation Ford Mustang.”

Your best result at Texas is a ninth-place finish in the fall 2016 Truck Series race at Texas. Being at Stewart-Haas Racing and driving a new Haas Automation Ford Mustang, what are your expectations?
“Well, we easily had a top-five car in Fontana. If we could run in the top-five this weekend, I think it’ll be a huge thing for us. We’re still focusing on having solid days and trying to see if we can get some consistency going, but we’re looking forward to getting some good runs. With the resources we have from Ford and the support they’ve given us, we’re confident going into Texas that we can place well.”

This is your second of four races with teammate Kevin Harvick. What are your thoughts on having a teammate on track?
“It will be huge having Kevin. He’s helped me immensely in the past few weeks with notes to have and things I need to think about going into each race. We’ll have another car to bounce things off since it’s a new track and he’s probably going to figure the place out fast because he’s one of the best.”

Tony Stewart holds the NASCAR Cup Series qualifying lap record at Texas and won Cup Series races there in 2006 and 2011. Will you also look to him for advice?
“I always try to lean on Tony as much as I can. He’s been a huge help because he’s been at the track trying to give me advice, especially about communication. It’s been awesome having Tony around. He’s had a lot of success there, so I’m sure I’ll benefit from him.”

How will the new track surface affect the racing?
“I think everybody liked the old surface because it was so worn out, you could move around and tires were a big deal. This year, we’ll just have to figure out the track and try to see where we need to be and what we need to do. I’m sure it’s going to be an edgy track because of the new pavement. It’ll be a challenge, but I’m confident we can accomplish what we want.”

Jeff Meendering, Crew Chief Q&A

What are your thoughts and expectations on racing at Texas Motor Speedway?
“So far, our intermediate car program is off to a great start. I’m looking forward to Texas because it’s a track that’s being repaved and they changed the banking, so no one really has any experience there. I feel like the playing field will be more level. Cole’s been getting up to speed on the new tracks he’s raced at, so I think we’re going to get our car dialed in faster than our competition will.”

With Kevin Harvick being on the track, as well, how will your strategy be different than other races?
“We’re going there with a few different style setups, so we’ll get a read on their setup and they’ll get a read on ours. Cole leans on Kevin pretty hard for driving and recommendations, so I think it’ll be good to compare the two setups.”
