Never said they would win with old tires, never thought that was a possibility, and realize Burton finished 5th on old tires. My point was that 5th was better than 15th.
but if he starts on the outside with old tires he would have been toast. That decision one way or the other was gonna be a very hard one. Tony restarted 5th & ended up 18th. The Dinger started on the inside 3rd & finished 14th. Some of what happened was pure luck. Burton finished 5th but he could have finished outside the top 20 as well. Ryan pitted but had a bad stop (the last couple stops were bad) otherwise he would have restarted couple spots (rows) forward & he might have gotten a top ten. One other thing as they discussed not pitting or pitting was Ryan said the left rear tire was gone. Which led to the pit stop & with it being the left rear led to a four tire stop. So while Burton finished 5th others that didn't pit or took two fell way back, while some on 4 tires went way forward. It was kinda luck of where you restarted & who hit who & slowed up who behind them & all. I don't think I would have complained with the pitting or staying out personally either way. Just sucks when you lose spots in the pits every stop. MB apologized after the last three stops & then did it again once the race was over for the crew messing up on pitroad.
