newman takes pay cut to stay at SHR

UPDATE 2: Ryan Newman confirmed Thursday he has signed a contract extension with Stewart-Haas Racing for next season. Newman is in the final year of the deal he signed in 2009. The extension is a one-year agreement, and he said he took a cut in pay just as nearly every driver has of late. "I think in general everybody out there right now has taken a pay cut," Newman said. "No different than the cost of a seat in the grandstands is down. It all correlates." Newman said he isn't aware of any signed sponsors for next season on his #39 Chevy. "I feel fairly confident that we'll have good branding on the car," he said. "I can't sit here and say exactly who it is going to be and how it's going to lay out and what race they're going to be at. I can tell you this for sure - it's going to be multiple sponsorships."(Associated Press)(9-7-2012)

Re: neman takes pay cut to stay at SHR

At least he's still got good equipment....Tuba Gibson has to go. I remember 'bout 10 yrs ago Mark Grace was willing to take a pay cut to stay in Chicago buuuuut, they shipped him to Arizona anyway, then, he went on to help the D-Backs win the W/S....We'll see what happens.

Re: newman takes pay cut to stay at SHR

i dont know what to make of it all to be honest, im not gonna sit here and say its ryan's fault or SHR fault, but it is a mediocre team at best, the did luck into the win at mville, i still found it hard to believe tony said he was pleased with the progress of the 39 team, it doesnt matter if they get the best cars from HMS, if no one knows how to set them up and get the most out of them, it is useless,
but tg has some kind of stranglehold on that job.... so expect the same next year, expect 26 weeks of bein mad at how they ran, with two or 3 weeks thrown in with a top 5, it wont get any better.

" i still found it hard to believe tony said he was pleased with the progress of the 39 team"

To add--Ryan himself has said repeatedly he is happy with his team and not to mention the Nascar anylists who also say he has a good CC. Yet--lots of critics around this forum apparently thinking they know more then the owner, and the driver etc as if they are happy and dont see any major problems, then maybe just let it be?? I think some here are starting to realise this also as it bothers you, but it is what it is and isnt likely to change.

Also the point of Ryan taking a pay cut, as others have done isnt uncommon these days for drivers who love what they do and just want to drive. Most have made their careers financially anyway so isnt a big deal in that regard. 8-)

im not worried about the CC as many here are, sure it doesnt make sense, but if they wanna run mid pack and be mediocre, more power to them, have fun tryin to fill that car with sponsors....

It is simple they dont air out their laundry to the media. What do you want them to say? We have problems with our team? Like MJ has said, the team is a mediocre team & continue to have no changes made to it. Unlike what MJ says. I do place blame. When ownership is happy with a mediocre team I blame ownership for having a mediocre team.

Re: newman takes pay cut to stay at SHR

Thats the drivers fault for not airing it out, as lots of big named drivers have NO problem telling their crews they messed up over the radio during a race or that better not happen again or your fired or the best one was the driver who had a lousy pit stop and told the entire crew they WERE all fired--course they werent. Nascar loves "airing it out" and also it lets the fans know its a crew issue and not the driver and that does matter in many circles. Tony said it last yr when he said "if his car was that lousy he has no businnes taking a spot in the chase anyway", course then he fired them all up and won the darn thing, so maybe it helps? How bout this--IF Ryan threw his team "under the bus" for lousy pit stops would it get them fired up? Iam sure some here would love to see him do that as many dont like the crew anyway and Ryan saying it would validate what they are thinking.

Go ahead and jump on me but even Danica in Indycar many times has said the car was lousy while being interviewed. she really said it at the 2010 Indy500, because her car WAS lousy. It doesnt hurt as lots of fans love the fire--believe or not--and the ones that dont--well they are in the minority anyway so doesnt matter. Iam actualy dissapointed she has gotten so calm and nice because that isnt her, of the past anyway? I wish she would say it like she feels --again--and other fans have noticed that also on other forums and dont like the nice and polite Danica, as they miss the fire that she used to show and so do I? Not sure whats happenning whether this is a PR thing or afraid to anger the new & different Nascar fans-- or what-- as you can tell she isnt happy with a lousy setup, but just acts likes "its OK" --its NOT-- so SAY IT.

It does matter as remember "nice guys finish last" whether you agree or not? 8-)

Re: newman takes pay cut to stay at SHR

1st off Tony is an owner of SHR, Ryan is not. They make changes to his championship team while leaving Ryans mediocre team the same. Dont even dream that Tony & Haas dont see that the 39 team is in mediocry. That all falls on ownership no matter what a driver says or thinks. They have meetings every single week, so quit with the ownership doesnt know the team sucks without Ryan saying so. Also I think it takes more of a man not to talk trash to thwe media & keep behind closed doors.
Bringing up Danica is simply funny. We all know she is a whiner when things arent perfect. LOL
You call it fire, so be it. She was whining last weekend & when she finally did what the CC wanted her to, the car did exactly what he said it would.
Anyone thinkng Ryan doesnt drive hard or doesnt have any fire doesnt pay attention. He is driving harder than most of those guys out there, because he is driving his heart out with a crap handling car most weekends.
I would rather Ryan act the way he is, than become a whiner. When a team is mediocre it is ownerships job to change something (I was hoping they would change drivers personally)
No matter if you want to say it is the crew, the CC or the driver, it still falls on ownership to make a change.

Check mate!

Re: newman takes pay cut to stay at SHR

its funny how people wanna blame ryan for this by saying he is happy with the tuna, but he is a hired hand, and if you wanna go with that philosophy about ryan, it says many thing about tony and SHR that they will let a driver dictate what happens on a race team, it means they are weak, so if thats how some of you wanna look at it, more power to ya, then it will explain why they are losing sponsors left and right.

And yet again racer1, maybe Ryan doesn't "air it out" because he has respect for his fellow teammates, and his elders, good integerty, high morals, I could go on if you want.

Re: newman takes pay cut to stay at SHR

Ryan reminds me a lot of Brian Urlacher...neither will complain about ownership or teammates in front of a microphone. Last week reporters asked about Brian's knee and he said it was none of their business...the same as Ryan did with his interview with Marty Smith before last week's race about his contract (although he said it differently).

Ryan & Tony have kept their blue collar attitudes through thick and thin.

Well that means they have no fire!!!!
They dont care enough to trash teammates in a public forum!!!
They are just there to earn a paycheck now. This means they dont drive hard anymore.

Jamo, you are very correct with the similarities between Ryan & Brian. Never really correlated the two, but I guess that would explain why the both are my favorites in their respected sports.

Go Ryan!!!!! Go Bears!!! LOL
June in South Dakota
