I make purchases quite often online and this does seem high. The difference is they chart by price not where it is to be shipped or weight. My guess the reason they do this is it's quicker and they don't have to have areas or weights to check.
All shipping rates have had increased in the past few months. That includes USPO, UPS< and Fed Ex.
Also priority mail is not really any faster than first class. They aren't careful either as I had a small package leave Florida and landed in Maine. I live in Michigan. I was furious and made several inquires and received no satisfaction. What I read between the lines were "they don't really care".
