Re: Tony to start 2nd

Alright Tony and Ryan!!!! In the Weekly Picks this week I cheated, I chose Tony for 1st, 2nd and 3rd. That's the way I chose last year during the Chase and it worked out good. Hopefully my electric will be back on so that I can watch the race or maybe this little generator will hold out long enough.

Scratch that.. he is in the back because of getting busted for an open cooling hose in the cockpit

Re: Tony to start 2nd

Nice. Doesn't mean much. But I hope he is able to keep it up front and not having over heating issues like at Talladega.

I wonder what was wrong on the car? Bummer that he is starting 43rd. Needs to avoid the wrecks.

Would now be an appropriate time to talk about the elephant in the room?

WHAT.........???? When did this happen? Okay, someone please explain how having an open cooling hose in the cockpit is going to make a car a aero dynamically better?? This is crazy!! Hmmm mm........ It is not like a c-post, it is inside.

well I dont know what this open hose is, but if it relieves pressure from the engine compartment or somewhere else, it would be benefical. Beyond that. For whatever reason it is a rule. it is a rule, therefore a rule infraction.

Newman Qualifies Second, Stewart 42nd at Daytona (Stewart's Qualifying Time Disallowed).

STEWART-HAAS RACING

Coke Zero 400 Qualifying

Date: July 6, 2012

Event: Coke Zero 400 Qualifying (Round 18 of 36)

Series: NASCAR Sprint Cup Series

Location: Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway (2.5-mile oval)

Pole Winner: Matt Kenseth of Roush Fenway Racing (46.781 seconds at 192.386 mph)

SHR Lineup: Ryan Newman (2nd, 46.789 seconds at 192.353 mph)

Tony Stewart (42nd, Time disallowed)

Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 39 Aspen Dental Chevrolet, led the two-car Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) contingent in time trials Friday at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway by qualifying second for Saturday night’s Coke Zero 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. Newman turned a lap of 46.789 seconds at 192.353 mph on the 2.5-mile oval.

“That was a good lap, and I thought we were decent yesterday when we were fourth in practice,” said Newman, who won the 2008 Daytona 500. “I just have to thank Aspen Dental for jumping on board. This is one of our two races with them, so hopefully we’ll have a good outing with them here in Daytona. We need it from a team standpoint and from a points perspective. I think our car is good, but we need to make it to the end. That’s the bottom line.”

Tony Stewart, driver of the No. 14 Mobil 1/Office Depot Chevrolet, originally posted the second-fastest time but his lap was disallowed by NASCAR after the car failed post-qualifying inspection. The team had an open cooling hose in the cockpit, which is in violation of Rule 20A-2.1J in the NASCAR rulebook. Stewart will now start 42nd. The cap that went on the cooling hose fell off during the run, and while there was no malicious intent by the team, NASCAR still had to assess the penalty.

“It’s just one of those things,” said Stewart, who is a three-time winner of the Coke Zero 400 (2005, 2006 and 2009). “It wasn’t intentional and we weren’t trying to gain an advantage. The cap just fell off during the run and that’s a violation, so we’re serving the penalty. It’s not ideal to start in the back, but there are a lot worse places to have to start from the rear, too.”

Matt Kenseth captured his eighth career Sprint Cup pole, his first of the season and his first at Daytona by posting a lap of 46.781 seconds at 192.386 mph.

Newman will start on the outside of row one, while Kasey Kahne (46.804 seconds at 192.291 mph), Greg Biffle (46.841 seconds at 192.139 mph) and Jeff Gordon (46.860 seconds at 192.061 mph) rounded out the top-five.

Forty-four drivers attempted to qualify for the Coke Zero 400. The lone driver not making the cut in the 43-car field was Robert Richardson.

As far as manufacturers went, Ford took the top spot via Kenseth’s pole run. Chevrolet was next best at the hands of Newman. Dodge was the third-fastest make thanks to eighth-quick A.J. Allmendinger (46.901 seconds at 191.894 mph), while 18th-fastest Martin Truex Jr. (47.060 seconds at 191.245 mph) carried the flag for Toyota.

The Coke Zero 400 gets underway at 7:30 p.m. EDT on Saturday with live coverage provided by TNT beginning with a pre-race show at 6:30 p.m.

I hope not. Austin didn't lose his because pit stall selection was made before the infraction was caught. Hopefully Tony will keep his too if they'd already made the selections.

dont know for sure, but if I had to guesss I would say yes.
They moved Ryan to 2nd instead of moving up the outside line. So that means to me he officially would be 42nd (or whatever he went back too) it isnt like changing an engine & having to go to the back. If he was officially 2nd then sent to the back, Ryan would still be considered 3rd & not moved up to the front row.
So considering what Nascar has done with the line up I would say Tonys team picks 42nd (or whatever it is) Ryan would now pick 2nd.

Dont quote me on that, but if I understand the rules correctly that is my guess.

Re: Tony to start 2nd

When your qualifying time is disallowed it is like you never hit the track. So everyone who qualified behind you qualified one spot up. It is different from when say someone blows an engine in practice, qualifies, but has to go to the back. Their qualifying lap was allowed. But since they changed their engine they go to the back and everyone in the lane that person was in moves up.

Get it?

Re: Tony to start 2nd

Tony has stall 8, behind the 31 and in front of Marcos. Ryan has stall 21, which is open in front and has Trevor behind him.

It would seem he may have had to pick 42nd otherwise I don't think they made a good pick. Ryan has a good stall though.
