Re: RUSTY!

Never was a fan of Rusty Wallace. But I respect him enough not to call him Crusty...

He was a great driver and deserved to voted into the hall of fame. I was happy for him and glad that he was finally speechless.

Re: RUSTY!

CLOWN......the selection committee must have smoked something from a Cheech-n-Chong movie. I defy ANYONE here to go back and do at least a LITTLE research and you'll see that THIS IS A BIIIIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGGG f*cking slap in the face of TRUE HISTORY and proves that it "isn't who ya KNOW, its who ya BLOW". Why not induct people that TRULY deserve it instead of trying to be "politically correct" in the "Modern Era"............ BULLSH*T !

Re: RUSTY!

A little history for some folks that may take exception to my original post.......

The 1960 NASCAR Grand National Champion,
Rex White, is hardly a household name today, but a look at his accomplishments reveals that he was Chevrolet's best driver in the early 60's and one of its most consistent drivers ever. If Richard Petty is the Babe Ruth of stock car racing, then Rex White is Joe DiMaggio.

Even though he didn't get his first victory until the ninth event in 1960, he won six of his 28 career victories that year and finished in the top 10 in 35 of his 40 starts that year. White was known for running up front even if he didn't finish. He was also recognized as one of the first drivers to focus on the goal of the Grand National title. Despite his entire racing being done on a shoestring budget, he captured 36 poles and had 28 career victories in 233 starts and finished in the top-10 in the point standings six of the nine years he competed on NASCAR's elite circuit. The following year, he won seven times and finished second in points.

Rex did not always have the fastest car, but he could set up a car better than most. He had all sorts of contorted positions and the cars looked different, but he won.

"I don't have any idea what it cost to run a season, but it was more than I had," said White. "Remembering all those figures 40-something years ago is kind of tough for me. I probably didn't keep up with the costs even back then.

"I kept books in my left, rear pocket. When there wasn't any money there, I wasn't taking in enough.
"We didn't write down anything. We had no bookkeeping system. But it got the job done.

"I never dreamed I would see the sport where it is today. But I did see that when television got into it, there would be no end to where it could go. With television you could get into everybody's house. People that had never been to a race could see it on television, and then after they went to a race, they're hooked."

Born August 17, 1929, White overcame polio as a child to have a racing career that included leading more than 50 races and more than 100 top-five finishes. From 1959 through 1963 Rex won more races than any other driver, competing against Lee Petty, Ned Jarrett, Fireball Roberts, Junior Johnson, Joe Weatherly, Curtis Turner, Buck Baker and others.

A look at his accomplishments reveals that he was Chevrolet's best driver in the early 60's. White was a member of the original Chevrolet racing team, and both he and his crew chief, Louie Clements (below, right picture), worked at the legendary Southern Engineering Development Company (SEDCO), which built Chevrolet race cars for many teams. With the exception of the last half of the 1963 season and the 1964 season, he always drove a Chevy. He amazingly finished in the top ten in just under 70 percent of his races

Re: RUSTY!

hey he deserves it, his stats back him up, i got no problem with them throwing a spot to a modern era driver, one per class is a good fit.

Re: RUSTY!

I have always liked ol Rusty in the MGD #2 :-)

Like Jamo, I followed him until his, as Miller Beer put it, "Last Call." ;-)

I know he is hated by many... especially his underling family members ... and his commentating... but really yall... if it wasn't for Rusty... we wouldn't have the roof flaps we have now! LOL

Seriously, check the history - roof flaps were inspired by none other than... Rusty himself. :-)
Smoke 'em if ya got 'em!

Sh*t happens... but don't worry, it usually happens to me.

Re: RUSTY!

I'll admit i always liked Rusty, but on the other hand i have to agree with MW on this one as others before him should be in first. The only reason Dale Earnhardt Snr.got in first i believe was due to his death and seven championships,i idolized the man,but felt the pioneers of the sport should have been first and still feel the same way.Why not just put Jeff Gordon and Jimmy Johnson up for it now as well,it is alot of B.S.! :?
Interesting facts about Rex White MW,i didn't know that-cool info.Fireball Roberts was a song i heard as a child and was then explained to who he was,how good he was and how his career was short lived.Terry Labonte i also agree with over Rusty, perhaps if Terry wasn't so quite? Wendell Scott against all odds? They have to pick one from the modern era every year than i guess you have to be retired, dead or be in the media, what next Michael Waltrip or Jimmy Spencer next year?

Re: RUSTY!

well if both JJ and Gordon retires tomorrow they should get a nod to be inducted, they have stats to back it up, not to mention the championships, JJ will probably be the only true threat to 7 championships and knocking off 5 in row alone should get him in early, i stand by my statement that it is good that they allow 1 modern day driver, because not all fans know the 50's and 60's and it is good to give them one driver they can relate to........

Terry needs to stop racing for under funded teams a few times a year first. Then he has to wait three years to be eligible. 22 wins and two championships will certainly get him in on his first try too.

Rusty's records are quite astounding when you think about it. He raced against Richard Petty, Darrell Waltrip, Cale Yarbrorough, Bobby Allison and David Pearson when they were at their best and beat them. Then he raced against Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson, Kurt Busch, Matt Kenseth, Bobby Labonte, Bill Elliott, Terry Labonte and Dale Jarret at their best and beat them. No matter what decade he raced in, he was always a factor and retired at the top of his game. That is Hall of fame worthy to me.
