Luckily we got rain last night and are due for more today and their flower beds and gardens are not large.

I went to the selectmen's meeting last night and this whack job gets up and says we are going to have a festival to celebrate the BEAVER, she even put together a movie that the local movie theater will show.

She wants the town to put up "beaver crossing" signs near all the bodies of water where they are located.

I stood up and said "Oh good grief, you would be placing them by all fifteen lakes and ponds and the more than a dozen rivers, streams, and brooks. If you think I am going to sit idly by and let you demand the taxpayers to pay for close to 100 of these signs...you have another thing coming. The moose don't cross anywhere near the signs posted about them, don't expect the beavers to be any different"

Oh this woman was a piece of work, she wanted to create policies and ordinances to protect the beaver from trapping and anything else.

Again I stood up because she apparently has not done her homework. You can not create policy or ordinances that would supercede state law. Everything is carried out by the game wardens.

Several people stood up last night and talked about all the damage the beavers have done to their properties around town and said if the town is going to spend taxpayer dollars to protect town owned land and repair a lot of these areas then they better be prepared to lower our property taxes as well so we can afford to fix our own properties. Oh, that went over well.

People started talking about taking down their dams and tearing apart their huts to get rid of them. Again I stood up "Listen, you need to know as our family has learned this already...according to state law, you can not touch a beaver hut under any circumstances and you can only tear down a dam once you have a letter from the state signed by a game warden giving you permission to do so for your property from that time going forward, but you want to make sure it is worded that way and not a one time thing and as somebody whose family owns property on Beaver Pond we know all about this." Watch the state get flooded with requests over the coming days from residents in Bridgton.

I was shutting up a lot of people everytime I stood up. God help the school board when I get on there.

"You can't fight City Hall," but Beaver is giving it a try.

The thing is, this woman is a citizen who is making all these proposals and not the selectmen. I don't think that the board as a whole is taking her seriously.

I say this because one of the selectmen walked up to this woman and said he knew all about beavers and she was pleasantly surprised at first. That was until he said he has been trapping them for more than 30 years and selling their pelts and this year he was getting $30 a pelt which was good money because last year all he was getting $14. Needless to say the woman became very irritated and upset.

Sounds like she'll just have to get over it.
