Tony closing in on 50 career wins

Tony is at 46 career wins right now. Only four away from 50. What an amazing career not just in NASCAR, but in motorsports this man has done. Creating a whole new meaning to the phrase "can drive anything." Kyle Busch may win alot in stock cars but as Tony closes in yet another milestone, I began to look at his career a bit. I honestly believe that when he reaches that milestone, that will solidify him being the 3rd greatest NASCAR driver of all time.

2 time wka champion
nma champion
Has sat on the pole for the Indy 500
Has finished on the podium in the 24 hours of Daytona

Re: Tony closing in on 50 career wins

i dunno about third, cuz ya still got cale, dw, or maybe bobby. i dunno if i put JJ in number 3, tittles ya he is 3rd, but got to get more wins to change that. and his was done in 10 years,
but ya make a good argument, since SC brought him up, it doesnt look like kyle will get to that bogus 200 wins, i still wonder why media include all his wins together but no one elses.......... go figure

Re: Tony closing in on 50 career wins

Pearson I would say right now is third. 105 wins is pretty #### impressive. I would rank Tony above Pearson, DW, Cale, and Johnson because of the fact he won a championship as a driver/owner in NASCAR's most competitive era and has won titles with different crew chiefs.

As for Kyle. I don't think he will ever have the success that Tony has enjoyed, but he will win a championship. Like his brother 1 title and he's done.

Re: Tony closing in on 50 career wins

lets ask this question.......... say biffle wins the championship, this year or whenever, how far on the scale would he rate, because he would be the only driver to win a series championship at the 3 levels..

"1998 Indycar Racing League champion"

Tony won the IRL title in 1997 for Team Menard, edging out Davey Hamilton.
Kenny Brack won the IRL championship in 1998 for AJ Foyt

Opps your right, 1998 was his last season in the IRL.

Hmm that's a good question. It would put him solidly in the top 15 at least. Being that he is the only of 3 drivers who has won a title in 2 of the 3 top series to have a chance to do it, would be impressive (Bobby Labonte could win a truck title if he retires from cup and decides to race trucks, and who knows how Johnny Benson would have done in Cup with a better ride).

Re: Tony closing in on 50 career wins

Bobby should have never left Gibbs, he wasn't going to get fired by them, he'd probably still be in the 18 today, probably would have won some more races. He has made some poor career choices.

Re: Tony closing in on 50 career wins

that petty move was the kiss of death, it seems anyone who drives for petty you have to sell your soul to do it.

to get back to the original question, im not sure where tony would rank, but i will give him a spot in the top 6 ( hard to limit to 5 ) of course if you take his whole body of work he is one of those rare breeds, all he has to do now is win a nhra event and he would be king of the hill....

Re: Tony closing in on 50 career wins

Tony will also, and will be the only Winston Cup, Nextel Cup, and Sprint Cup Champion.

It really is hard to compare drivers from one era to another era, but I would say he is in the top 5.

Re: Tony closing in on 50 career wins

Petty has screwed a lot of drivers in the last few years...

After Tony wins 50 races I would say the top ten of all time would like like this...

1.Dale Earnhardt
2.Richard Petty
3.Tony Stewart
4.Jeff Gordon
5.Jimmie Johnson
6.David Pearson
7.Cale Yarbrough
8.Darrell Waltrip
9.Lee Petty
10.Ned Jarrett
Cup: 14, 1, 29, 88, 99, 11, 17, 39, 15, 5, 2, 16
NW: 7, 31, 3, 11, 60, 88, 12
Trucks: 9, 88, 3, 7, 17, 31
IRL: 10, 11, 12, 26, 3, 38, 27

Re: Tony closing in on 50 career wins

I gotta give David Pearson the nod over Petty......

Petty won 95 more races than Pearson, buuuuuuuut, he ran 610 MORE races.
Petty...1184 races....Pearson 574 races.
Petty...200 wins....Pearson 105 wins
Petty...555 T5 finishes....Pearson 301 T5 finishes
Petty...712 T10 finishes....Pearson 366 T10 finishes
Petty...123 Poles....Pearson....113 Poles.....

Plus, if I'm not mistaken....Pearson only ran a full season 5 years.
