Sparta traffic was not fun

Because I didn't have anything better to do I checked out the uproar over getting to the Kentucky track. Denny Hamlin was caught in it and nearly missed drivers meeting. Others took at least 8 hours to do a 90 minute drive and others turned around and went home. They had a picture of miles long back up and it gave me the creeps just looking at the mess. I really wonder if anyone will want to go through this again next year.

Re: Sparta traffic was not fun

Was there & done that & not sure if we'll try it again either.
The late people were turned away because of no parking & they just left & went back home even though they still had tickets. One group of 3 people came in next to us around 50 laps into the race. They didn't like the no action & stayed about 50 laps & they left.

My husband said today a friend of ours, someone he knows went on a bus there & they were late getting to the track. First of all they drank so much beer on the way down that the toilet over flowed on the bus & they ran out of drinks inside & the driver wouldn't stop the bus to get more & wouldn't empty the potty, then they didn't make the race until lap 50.

Re: Sparta traffic was not fun

Jayski reporting that Smith (owner of KY. Speedway) blames the highway for the traffic problems. But I don't agree on that one.

We were there stuck on the highway. I 71 is 3 lanes near the track. 2 lanes were marked for the track & the 3rd (fast lane) was for direct traffic. People were using all 3 lanes which was part of the problem. You did not see working cops until at the first exit (which we took). We were west bound on 71, so the exit we took brought us out to the gift shop which is over in turn 3. I don't know how to solve that problem other than to have cops setting up in the middle grass area between the highway & if anyone is in the 3rd (fast) lane trying to get over, they should be made to keep moving along. They're not special where they should go around everyone else who's waited umpteem time in line like they're supposed to do.

The middle lane needs to be for the second exit which will be the other side of the track. Then the right lane should be for the first exit to put you at turn 3/4.

Now once on that road after you exit off the highway, they have 3 lanes & they had them full trying to get everyone to on lane to turn into the track. Don't know what to say about that one. It was being directed so many from one lane & then take the next lane & so many & so on.

On coming traffic on that road was trying to get in as well & they too had to wait their turn.

But what #### us off was, here we were near the first exit for the west bound 71 traffic & they had that exit closed. They were trying to fill up the other side of the track with traffic first. That was a stupid move on whom ever's idea that was. Finally they opened that first exit that will take you to the parking lot for turns 3/4.

There was a cop in the grass area between the hightway right at the exit. All he was doing was sitting in his car probably eating donuts & drinking coffee & laughing at everyone. People who had already passed up that exit was backing up in the emergency lane & going to an area to go down the slope to get onto the exit ramp.

No highway control period was seen by us.

The only problem they'll always have will be after the race when everyone wants to leave. The highway for that many people just can't be tolerated because it starts out as 3 lanes & then shortly it goes down to 2 lanes. Then you have people in the fast lane needing to exit off other exits on the right before you get to I-75. Then I-75 south exits first & the north bound has to drive a little bit further to merge onto I-75.

Now, I don't know where that one exit road will take you to, at least we had a Tom Tom navigator device if we had to exit out someplace we didn't know.

As for the other side of the track, that side road will take you into Warsaw, KY. Those that need north bound 75 can take that way or you can go west onto 71 & take the next exit & that's a new expanded road which will take you over the dam or what ever it's called. The Ohio river is up high & there's this lock dock that fills with water for the lower side to meet with the higher side or if you need to travel west on the river, they have to lower the water out. That will take you over into Indiana. Turn right onto that road & you can also get onto I-75, but it's a drive. You'll pass by the 3 casino boats Belterra, then the Grand Victoris, then Hollywood.. Hollywood is in Lawrenceburg. Then there's a highway to get onto there but I forget which it is. One way will take you to Cincinnati & the other Indy. But the problem going that way is, it's a one lane road each way, no matter which way you leave other than the highway itself.

Anyway, unless they can make 71 a 3 lane or more highway, leaving the track after the race is still going to pose a problem. But getting there shoudln't.

Now the owner said the parking people he hired done a louse job. Well, there was loose parking. People left plenty space beteen vehicles & some took up 2 spots so they could set up their canopy & tables to cook & eat on under it or set up corn hole games & such. The parking people just didn't care. I can sure bet next race there won't be no wide open parking spots or 2 spots per person permitted. 4 wheelers were running around & the track said they're not permitted. No policing was going on.

Shuttle service, .............where was it, seen it run once. Track shuttle 4 wheel vehicles & marked as such were running up & down & no one but the driver in them. What gives?

Re: Sparta traffic was not fun

I guess I'll have to also add, if Smith wants his Cup attendance back, he'd better get that traffic plan in place early before ticket sales start for next season & then make it public on what the plans are & how it's going to work & even why it's going to work. Other wise, people aren't going to care. More so if no more cars can pass than they did at this race, people won't care if they come or not. The majority of changes were done because of pit stops. It really wasn't an exciting race like we thought it was going to be. If it doesn't improve, it's going to lack big time in Cup sales.

I seen a lot of empty seats for Nationwide. Guess that should have been a  for how the Cup race was going to go. One family parked next to us said they came to the Nationwide race & was no problem's parking or anything, hardly anyone there.

To think I waited & fussed over the track not getting a Cup date & now this!? What a shame. If that's how it's going to be from now on, bring back The Rock & race there again.

Re: Sparta traffic was not fun

This situation was a nightmare and I'm sure anyone caught in the traffic "jamboree" will think twice before they buy a ticket for another CUP race at Kentucky.
