Earnhardt is off to a fast start, winning NASCAR’s biggest race and scoring five top-five and six top-10 finishes in the first nine races. He is fifth in the Sprint Cup standings, 32 points behind leader Jeff Gordon.
“I’m pretty blown away that we’ve won the First Quarter 2014 Driver of the Year Award,” Earnhardt said in a new release from the organization. “ It’s an honor and really humbling to be chosen. The members that vote on this award are a credible group, and it’s an award that’s meant a lot to different drivers. It’s one that I’m proud to have been voted for.”
Earnhardt’s father won the annual award in 1987 and 1994.
Earnhardt received seven first-place votes from the panel. Kevin Harvick and IndyCar Series driver Will Power tied for second. Kyle Busch and Nationwide Series rookie Chase Elliott, who drives for Earnhardt’s JR Motorsports, also received votes.
