Re: Earnhardt, Jr, Graham Rahal (UPDATE)

UPDATE: Dale Earnhardt Jr. said Tuesday he wants to swap race cars with Graham Rahal, but believes it won't be possible because they drive for rival manufacturers. Both drivers are sponsored by Army National Guard this season. Rahal reached out to Earnhardt on Twitter after Sunday's NASCAR race at Fontana, proposing they swap cars in an exhibition. Only Earnhardt drives a Chevy in NASCAR, and Rahal's car in IndyCar is a Honda. Because Chevy and Honda are direct competitors in IndyCar, and Earnhardt is so closely associated with Chevy, he said he doesn't think the swap is doable. "Well, he drives a Honda, which is more than just a speed bump," Earnhardt said during an appearance at Charlotte Motor Speedway. "If I wanted to drive an Indy car, I'm sure I could get with Penske or somebody who owned a Chevy and take a couple laps somewhere. But it would have been fun to do that with Graham because of the relationship with our sponsor and the history of our families. I look forward to meeting him one day, but I think the fact he has a relationship with a different manufacturer is going to make it challenging - if not impossible - for me to drive that particular car."(Associated Press)(3-26-2014)

Re: Earnhardt, Jr, Graham Rahal (UPDATE)

MJ, thanks for the update.

Too bad this becomes unlikely. These types of events are
so good for motor racing overall. It gives fans of both venues
a glimpse of another form they might otherwise never view.

I have been blessed over the years to be close to this sport
in several venues. Many years ago my wife and I saw both
Long Beach Grand Prix AND the LA Times 500 in the same year.

It was an amazing experience. It also gave one the opportunity
to...... not necessarily compare, but experience the differences.
The amazing power produced by little tiny engines on a road course,
THEN, the huge cubic inch engines of NASCAR, on an oval.

We watched AJ Foyt win Ontario in 1971. Brian Redman won
Long Beach in 1975, and Buddy Baker won the Times 500.
We did more of those, but those stand out.

At Long Beach they had a support class called Formula 5000
We had a personal friend Driver/Owner in that race.
What a show.

Re: Earnhardt, Jr, Graham Rahal (UPDATE)

I say Jr should go for it. Others have did this.

Last year Kurt drove a V8 super car in Texas last year while doing a car swap with the 78 Furniture Row Chevy.

Others have done this, so why not? These drivers have big time connections and have an opportunity to fulfill some fantasies. I wish my phone would ring with a chance to drive a race car, but I am not a highly connected racecar driver.

Re: Earnhardt, Jr, Graham Rahal (UPDATE)

i personally love the crossover deal, it gives fans of both series to see what is out there, now i may not be the biggest Ku Busch fan, but i am excited as heck for him going to Indy and i hope he does a great job.....I know JJ wanted to try it,but since he had his two lil girls he promised his wife he wouldnt try it......

Re: Earnhardt, Jr, Graham Rahal (UPDATE)

I guess I don't understand why Jr would say it wouldn't be possible because of the different manufacturers.... When Tony and Lewis swapped... Tony 's car was a Chevy and Hamilton's F1 was a McLaren Mercedes. That didn't seem to cause problems with Chevy, so why should it now? Honda doesn't run in NASCAR, so to me it doesn't pose a loyalty issue. Besides, it's not for a race...just a few laps in each of the cars. It's not the same as when drivers (in NASCAR) are asked to sub, but can't because of brand affiliation. I have to imagine that there are other not obvious reasons for Jr's reluctance possibly...

Re: Earnhardt, Jr, Graham Rahal (UPDATE)

just remember couple yrs ago tony was going to do the 500 for AJ, but chevy nixed the deal because tony was under contract with chevy, plus the fact chevy is back in indy so i can see where it would be a problem.

Re: Earnhardt, Jr, Graham Rahal (UPDATE)

I understand MJ, but that was for a race...not a "one-off seat swap" like this would be. To me, Chevy and Honda being in Indycar is like Chevy and Toyota being in NASCAR. For a race, yes, there is a definite brand/manufacture loyalty issue when a driver wants to participate in a race in the competing brand. But a seat-swap for a couple hours?

Re: Earnhardt, Jr, Graham Rahal (UPDATE)

i really have no answer, i can only speculate, regardless what people think of him, he is the most popular driver and that makes him a big prize to chevy, maybe Jr doesnt want to rock the boat and get chevy mad, it doesnt mean it wont happen he just thinks "it might not be doable."

Re: Earnhardt, Jr, Graham Rahal (UPDATE)

UPDATE from Jayski....

Chevy has not received an official request from Dale Earnhardt Jr. to swap race cars with Honda driver Graham Rahal. Jim Campbell, the U.S. Vice President Performance Vehicles and Motorsports for Chevy, said Saturday the manufacturer would consider any proposal to drive an Indy car from Earnhardt but until then, any talk about a manufacture conflict is premature. "If we get a proposal, we'll take a look at it and we'll look at it with an open set of eyes. The rest is hypothetical," Campbell told The Associated Press. "Broadly speaking about any Chevy driver that is currently on our roster, if they decided to go race in another category or series, of course we'd love to see them in Chevys. There's no doubt about that. In some cases it works out like that, and in some cases it doesn't." Kurt Busch, who currently drives a Chevrolet for Stewart-Haas Racing in NASCAR, will drive a Honda for Andretti Autosport in the Indianapolis 500. He was encouraged by Chevy before completing the deal with Andretti to work with a Chevrolet team for Indy, but the manufacturer ultimately agreed he could drive for Andretti.(Associated Press)(3-30-2014)

Looks like the ball is in Jr's court....
