 I WAS AFRAID OF THIS..... :x :x

HOMESTEAD, Fla. (AP) — Roger Penske and Sam Hornish Jr. have been together for nearly 300 races over the last decade. They have celebrated an IndyCar championship as well as wins in two series across nine states. They have been dominant and disappointed. They have turned a working relationship into a lifelong friendship. So parting ways won't be easy.

Hornish drove his final race for Penske when he finished 12th in the Nationwide Series season finale Saturday at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Hornish came up three points shy of going out with a championship.
He ended up second to Austin Dillon in the final standings. Sprint Cup regular Brad Keselowski won the race. Hornish was near the front for much of the 200 laps, but faltered down the stretch on worn tires. Now, he faces an uncertain future.

"To see Sam race at the level he did with Kyle, right there all night, shows what a great racer he is," Penske said. "My issue with myself is I started him in the Cup level with no practice. One of the greatest open-wheel racers we had in IndyCar. I think maybe I started his career backwards."

So far, Hornish has no ride set up for 2014. He declined to even talk to Chip Ganassi Racing about replacing Dario Franchitti, the four-time IndyCar champion who abruptly retired earlier this week because of injuries and health concerns.

With Hornish committed to stock-car racing, some wonder where he will land next season.

Penske, though, doesn't believe Hornish's NASCAR career is over.

"I think people want him," said Penske, who still managed to win the Nationwide owners' championship. "I think he's going to have a chance to drive something next year. A couple things out there look quite promising. I would support him always.

"He needs to have a good ride because he's a quality guy, a family man. Remember, he won an Indy 500 for us. That's pretty special."

Indeed, Hornish won the 2006 Indianapolis 500. He won seven other times for Penske in IndyCar. He moved to NASCAR full time in 2008, but has mostly struggled while learning the nuances of stock cars.

He had eight top-10 finishes and led just 55 laps in three years — and he was out of a ride in 2011 when Penske ran out of sponsorship for the project. Hornish ran just 14 races, only one in the Sprint Cup series, that entire year.

He got another shot came when Penske began piecing together sponsorship packages. There was enough money for 20 Cup races in 2012 and a full Nationwide Series schedule. He ran another full Nationwide schedule this year.

But Penske told the 34-year-old Hornish he needs to be racing in the Cup series, where he doesn't have a spot for his longtime driver.

Hornish hasn't even hinted about his future, only saying he'd rather be a NASCAR test driver than an IndyCar regular.

"There's a lot of uncertainty at this point in time, but I feel as if we'll be able to make something happen," Hornish said. "But, like I've said in the past, it's all about trying to position me to move forward in some way. I don't want to take any more steps backward or be in something that's not going to give me the opportunity to go out there and be competitive and have an opportunity to at least run in the top 10.

"It wouldn't be optimal to run a part-time schedule, but it might help me out. I might be able to go and do testing. I might be able to learn a lot of other things and to be able to forge forward and to be even better in the next go-round."

I was pulling for Sam to win the championship. As runner-up, I hope he gets some good offers to choose from. Don't quite understand why Roger cut him loose. :?

This is just wish-ful thinking but if Penske thinks so much of Sam Hornish why didn't he do what other owners have done? They have paid for it from their own pocket. Haas is doing it Rousch did it a few seasons back and I'm sure others have too. The man is a billionaire and he wouldn't have to do it forever. Perhaps he already has something to look into.

Ok--saw this crap and have to reply to set you bums straight as you clealry cant see reality.

Reality--Danicas stats she is criticized for are BETTER then Sams stats at this point in HIS career, as even the negative like article from fox posted in Danicas thread states just that.

Same took 4 1/2 yrs & 146 races to win a lousy NNS race and now finished with his 7th season and only 1 other win in NNS--Yes--hes done with Penske. Anyone watching to see that anyone they put in the 22 car in NNs can beat Sam, even young kids with barely any NNs experience --says it all doesnt it given ALL the time Sam has been in Nascar?

Also dont start the crap about him being an Indycar and Indy500 champion--we all know he was great in that series as said before what a driver did in a previous series holds no water once they go into a different series--end of story. This is/was Nascar and basically he took a long time to learn it which Danica isnt allowed that much time apparently by the sexists pigs who dont want to see how bad Sam was and how long it took him to win, but constantly critisising her.

Also--BIG FACT--Danica actually represents and sells her sponsors products better then anyone and THAT matters MOST in todays world where Marketablily trumps results. Thats all kiddys--again--no charge for the lesson in facts.

BTW Iam sure Sam can get a ride somewhere, maybe a S&P team who needs a good qualifier to get them in the race, maybe PT Also or a lower funded team which Sam may not want to go down to that level? BTW--Sam is a nice guy--no offense to him and a great Indycar champion so he'll always have that. :)

Also--on a similar note of male drivers not being criticised--look where Pastrano finished his NNS FT season after a PT one also he didnt come close to making top 10 in points in NNS as he crashed more times then he finished and hes gone as he couldnt keep his sponsors either? Michael Annett will be in his 7th yr moving to cup next yr with NO wins either--just saying-- and there are plenty other male drivers who fair poorly but you wont hear about them--only Danica.

Basically--Welcome to Nascar-- home of the dumb #### redneck sexist pigs who didnt allow many woman in histoy to compete for very long and now Danica is here and they cant get rid of her and some cant handle that--so they trash her. The jokes on them though as she isnt going anywhere--not for a long while anyway or untill shes had enough>

Happy Holidays for some here and for others--well--you know who you are--what are you going to whine about now till the season starts again--boo hoo.

Dude....I think? Again what the h*ll are you talking about...

Danica Stalker

"Dude....I think? Again what the h*ll are you talking about..."

What do you think--some people feeling sorry for Sam and his lackluster results and now NO ride. Facts are anyone but Penske wouldve dumped him yrs ago with his slow start and meager nascar career with his 2 wins in 7 yrs only in NNS --thats all. Remember Montoya had 2 wins in 7 yrs in Cup and just got dumped as well?

Good luck to Sam as it woulve been interesting to see him in Cup FT instead of the arrogant kid Logano but--youth rules in Nascar apparently and oh yes--marketability to get sponsors--oh well?
