Fox News Camera Cable

The Fox Sports Camera cable that came down has affected the following cars:

#18 Kyle Busch
#55 Mark Martin
#9 Marcos Ambrose
#2 Brad Keselowski
#10 Danica Patrick

UPDATE #2
UPDATE #2: It is being reported that some fans in the grandstands have been injured, nothing serious reported but a number of reports of cuts have come out.

I got to love this thing. This was one of those things they said was better than buttered bread at the beginning of the season and that nothing could possibly go wrong. I looked at this at the beginning of the season and said to my self that by the end of May that we will have one of these things fail causing a red flag and damage to some of the cars. I was thinking last weekend that here we are with only one weekend left and nothing has happened. I guess I spoke to soon, it finally happened on the last weekend in May.

From the GG thread...
Buttered...sliced...it's all good bread. ;)
I thought the same thing before too Beaver.
I doubt they ever foresaw fans actually getting injured from this thing though. I hope the ones who went to the hospital are okay, and that they didn't take it in the face, leaving them with scars.
This was just an accident waiting to happen. There's enough cameras, it may be time to let this view go.
This race was definitely affected by the full moon. One crazy night.

Re: Fox News Camera Cable

They've been using these things at football stadiums for years, allowing for some really fanastic views of the game. I really hope they discover why the cable failed, not for NASCAR, but for watching football. I can't say that I remember any fanastic shots from these cameras for NASCAR, maybe it allowed FOX to use fewer cameras at the track and save money?

Re: Fox News Camera Cable

The aerial cams in football stadiums use a different type of steel cable/pulley system to move left, right, higher, lower and up & down the field. This camera just runs back & forth on stationary steel cables pulled back & forth by this rope that broke. Time for a redesign. :?

Re: Fox News Camera Cable

I'm sure somehow it's all Darrell Waltrip's fault. :D

I wonder why they can't just get rid of the pulling cable and motorize it? Then use some kind of remote control to make it go back and forth.

I feel bad for the fans that got hurt. I'm glad no one lost a limb!

That rope was probably flying around like a bullwhip as the cars snagged and pulled it. Scary :!:

Eh .... it was just "Fox messing everything up" ... as usual. ;-)

Hope those that got hurt are well compensated. What a buzz kill for a great day at the races!
Stupid "Fox"

And let us NOT forget ... that now, new NASCAR rules are being written, regarding "falling cables."

I believe - but am not sure - these rules will be the 3,857,206,186th .... not sure tho .... ;-)

Re: Fox News Camera Cable

Our paper said that cable that pulls the camera is 2,900 feet long. Wow!

Maybe next year FOX could try using drone cameras that fly around and take video. Nothing could go wrong with that, could it??? :P

Re: Fox News Camera Cable

NASCAR has banned the use of aerial camera systems by TV broadcasting companies for the foreseeable future.

In May during the early part of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Coca Cola 600 a aerial camera system cable broke and fell on to the track hitting numerous cars and flying back into the stands, injuring at least 10 fans.

After the incident, which would have the race red-flagged for over 30 minutes, NASCAR immediately paused the use of these camera systems until further review as to why the camera cable broke.

This week, without giving too much information on the review, NASCAR has banned the use of these aerial cameras for the foreseeable future. This includes the upcoming Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Re: Fox News Camera Cable

Maybe they couldn't conclusively figure out why the cable broke. Without a clear understanding "why," they didn't know what to fix or change. And, without that, they weren't just going to let the network continue using it. Too risky.
