OH NO !!! SAY IT ISN'T SO......................
All-Star weekend staple at Time Warner Cable Arena lacks sponsor for 2013

By Jim Utter — jutter@charlotteobserver.com

The annual NASCAR pit crew competition, which has been a staple of Sprint Cup All-Star weekend activities the past eight years in Charlotte, is going on at least a one-year hiatus due to a lack of sponsorship.

The event, which included individual and team competitions, typically has been held on the Wednesday night prior to the all-star race.

The winner of the team competition had been awarded the right to pick the first pit stall in the
race, which pays $1 million to the winning driver. That selection process will now revert back to its traditional method, which is based on qualifying results.

"As an industry, we were looking for the most sustainable model for the event," said NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp.

With no sponsorship and time running out before the typical date of the event at Time Warner Cable Arena, the decision was made to forgo the event this season.

NASCAR hopes the event will return as early as the 2014 season, Tharp said.

Sprint was the most recent sponsor of the competition but elected not to renew this year. Previous sponsors included Motorola and Craftsman.

The biggest losers in the decision are the teams in NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series.

The annual competition remains the single biggest event which shines the spotlight on what many call the "unsung heroes" of race weekends - the pit crews.

"This is a competition that will be greatly missed by all the crew guys," said Trent Cherry, pit crew coach for Penske Racing and tire carrier for driver Joey Logano's No. 22 Ford.

"I was fortunate enough to be part of the winning team in 2007 and it was a great experience. The competition that it generates with all the crew guys was something that we all looked forward to it!

I hate that this event has both been cancelled and became unsponsored.

It gave those hard working crew guys an evening where they were the stars.

Maybe there's still time...Doc's pit crew challenge. I like it.

I love the event where the crews got to show what they are about. The economy has limited so much and it is a shame.

I am SOOO sad and disappointed. Those crew guys work so hard and it was great for them to be in the spotlight for once. I hope they find a sponsor soon.... I do like the sound of Docs Pic Crew challenge. :D

Re: Pit Crew Challenge cancelled........

Always liked this event. A shame it's losing sponsorship.
Possible sponsors...
Pit Stop USA . com, (right up their alley)
Pit Stop Convenience Stores,
PC Pitstop,
There's several Pit Stop restaurants.
And just because everyone needs to make one once in a while...
  ;)
edit...lol..be sure to read "What's new at Pit Stop" in the bottom right of this last one.
heh heh...luxurious amenities at weddings. :D

Re: Pit Crew Challenge cancelled........

I can't tell you how bummed out I am about this.....TV doesn't do this event justice.......you sit in an arena very comfy seats...up close and personal with the pit crews and drivers, it is very casual....no loud motors to compete with, just fun competition..... You are 10 to 12 ft from the action and during the commercials the commentators come into the stands...it is hilarious. And the pit crews put on a show too! It is my favorite event and now it's no longer.....it is not an expensive ticket and the families of the drivers and pit crews are there... Kids love it....Bruton Smith should host the event, he probably could do it with his petty cash fund. I hope there is enough pressure to find a way to have this.

I am very, very sad that this is no longer......no El Dora, except for a truck race!

Ugh! This is one of my favorite things during the whole year! I'd almost rather watch this than the race. What a shame for all the crews. So now who gets the 1st pit stall? I was too lazy to read the articles since this really bummed me out.

Re: Pit Crew Challenge cancelled........

That sucks maybe the drivers could sponsor it as a way of giving back to their crews that would be cool.

To add to Jellikit's list of Pit Stop business'...we have one up here called Pit Stop Oil and Propane. They deliver propane, k-1, and heating oil to peoples homes and businesses. They even have two pink trucks and anything pumped off these trucks, a portion of the profit goes to cancer research.
