MOORESVILLE, N.C. (AP)—Roger Penske has hired AJ Allmendinger to replace Kurt Busch in the No. 22 car.

Last year, the 30-year-old Allmendinger had 10 top-10 finishes and was 15th in points driving Richard Petty’s No. 43 car.

The move, announced Wednesday, takes Penske back to his open-wheel roots.

Allmendinger won the open-wheel Barber Dodge Pro Series title in 2002, the Toyota Atlantics championship in 2003 and was the 2004 rookie of the year in the now defunct Champ Car series. In 2005, he won five races and was third in Champ Car in points. He joined the Cup circuit in 2007.

Busch won two races, took three poles and was one of 12 drivers to compete in the season-ending chase. Two weeks ago, after six bumpy seasons, Busch and Penske parted ways.

Not an Allmendinger fan, but when I heard that RPM was considering Kurt I hoped that he would get the ride. It's put up or shut up time for a driver with only four top fives, 26 top tens, and only 242 laps lead in 152 starts (only 51 laps lead last season).

He will only be in that car for one season unless he wins races and makes the chase (I could see a race win but not the chase). It will have a strong performance clause that will ruin any contractual success AJ can have. Its so that Hornish will be in it in 2013.

I think the Dingers record is eschewed. When he came in with Red Bull he should have been in the nationwide Series. Of course he was gonna suck that year. He never drove a car or was on a team with any chance of doing well until, last year when RPM late the year before found something & Ford 's bad #### engine came on. He was one spot from the chase when the cutoff came about this last season. I think if he is around the top 15 again this year, he will be signed long term with Penske. As far as Hornish, when they bring him back to cup, it will be as a whole team I have a feeling. Penske will go back to a 3 man team then.

I am glad to see the Dinger has improved immensely, glad to see him racing for Penske.
