Except he broke his leg & was on the mend so he couldnt be in the race. He is probably lucky he hurt himself & that it kept him out of that race.
Also I am not sure from the way I read a couple things. But it almost sounded like Wheldon wasnt to be in the race, but couldnt get anyone from the other series to bite on the 5 milllion dollar prize to come over & race so they told Wheldon he was eligible for it. So I am not sure if he was gonna race anyways, or only got into the race due to the sudden eligiblity for the 5 million. Not that it really matters, but I hope that wasnt the only reason he was in the race.

Kasey Khane wanted to do it too, but Hendrick said no

Dan wanted to do it because he wanted to get into a racecar somehow, someway (like Reed Sorenson says, you don't want people forgetting you exist in racing). He was able to secure enough sponsorship for LV and Kentucky.
Even though he was the Indy 500 winner, he was still w/o a ride the rest of the year.

He signed a deal w/ Andretti that morning to race for them in 2012.
If he would've won, which was highly unlikey due to the fact he had to start last (and he knew the odds were against him), he was going to give half of that to a lucky fan.

BTW, his check for winning the Indy 500 was 2.6 mil ;)

Very sad. That was only his 2nd race of the year. It was hard to find rides in Indy this year. Too bad he had a ride for this one out of all the others they've had.

He also raced at Kentucky 2 weeks ago, finished 14th, on the lead lap
That was an awesome race, side-by-side action, and only 3 cautions
Ed Carpenter won by 0.0098 seconds driving for Sarah Fisher Racing
