Neman vs Montoya

Sorry for the typo, should be Newman vs Montoya.

Found this on Nascar.com. Interesting read for sure. Wonder if Nascar will do anything to Juan.

RICHMOND, Va. -- While Juan Montoya walked briskly through the Richmond International Raceway garage Saturday night, focused solely on a golf cart waiting to whisk him away from the track, Ryan Newman had a different destination: the Sprint Cup hauler.

Two separate incidents during the Crown Royal 400 left the pair with damage to their race cars and damage to their feelings. Montoya wasn't in a mood to talk after he climbed from his No. 42 Chevrolet ... but Newman definitely was.

Once he parked his No. 39 Chevrolet, Newman made a bee-line for the yellow hauler and went inside, arriving a full 15 minutes before NASCAR president Mike Helton, director of competition Robin Pemberton and Sprint Cup series director John Darby made it down from the scoring tower.

Newman said he asked multiple questions of NASCAR's higher-ups, one of which was "just how to deal with things."

"I got a few answers," Newman said. "I'm not really sure the direction it's going to go, but I got a few answers.

"I'm just really disappointed in the way everything played out. I was obviously crashed, unintentionally the first time and intentionally the second. It's just unfortunate and we'll see what happens."

The first incident between Montoya and Newman occurred just after the one-quarter mark of the race as the two cars raced side by side coming onto the backstretch. Newman wound up clipping Montoya's rear bumper and sending him hard into the outside wall.

Both cars continued but debris from Montoya's car brought out the first caution of the race on Lap 108, and Montoya made multiple pit stops during the ensuing cleanup in an effort to repair damage to the bumper and the rear spoiler.

"He crashed himself, basically," Newman said. "I don't know if he didn't know he wasn't clear or what but he crashed himself off of Turn 2. I don't know if he thought it was me on purpose, but the message was delivered that it wasn't intentional.

"Either way, he ruined our day at that point and then he finished our day off later in the race, on purpose."

Newman was talking about the second incident, which happened on Lap 237. Montoya, several laps down at that point, turned Newman around in Turn 3. Newman had been running in the top 10 and was able to remain on the lead lap despite heavy damage to the rear end of his car. However, he lost two laps late in the going and finished 20th, nine spots better than Montoya.

The two had a similar dustup in the season finale at Homestead in 2006, Montoya's rookie season, but Newman said, "I don't know if [Montoya] could even remember back that far."

Denny Hamlin, who finished second, was asked his opinion of what transpired.

"I watch the screen," Hamlin said. "I don't like it. Every time Montoya has damage, you see who did it, they usually end up getting wrecked. You usually know that's coming.

"You have to realize ... Montoya, I like him, I think he's a #### of a driver, but you can't wreck everyone every time you get in an accident. Accidents happen. Guys make mistakes. Why hold grudges? Makes it tough to get in the Chase, too."

Newman dropped one position to eighth in the standings while Montoya lost three spots and is now 12th. As far as any possible discussions between the two, Newman was succinct.

"I'd say right now it probably isn't a good time for either of us to talk."

Re: Neman vs Montoya

Another disappointing race for Ryan and again, not of his doing. JPM needs some anger management classes. Unfortunately, I don't think NASCAR is going to do anything more about last night's incident and Ryan pays the price by dropping a position in the points standings. It's a real shame. He was running near the front most of the night, poised for a good finish.

I agree that Ryan handled himself much more professionally than JPM did.

Ryan is a class act where JPM is nothing but a whine ####. Good thing Rusty whine #### retired cause I don't think the sport could handle 2 whine #### like he and JPM.

Re: Neman vs Montoya

JPM is an idiot. Ryan didn't get into him on purpose. I hope NASCAR does something about intentional retailiation. It puts other drivers in danger as well. Even Martin Truex Jr was told to be careful around JPM because Newman had accidently got into him earlier. It affects everyone on the race track. Grrrrr
Here kitty kitty.. come get you some of this!!

This is good,i liked Rusty but i have to give yah that one,he was a whiner.Juan i never cared for in any divsion, there's an incident,he either caused it or he's in the mist of it! Ryan is a #### of alot better than JPM ever was or ever will be!This was the easiest discussion so far this year for me,i didn't even have to think about it.

Re: Neman vs Montoya

JPM is a spoiled brat !!! He has won big races around the world, but this is NASCAR. These drivers give respect and expect the same in return. Juan only loves Juan. He does not even get along with Jamie McMurray , who is a wuss also.
Ryan is an old school racer, That is why we love him !!
The first accident was Juan's fault! If Ryan would have let up any more, he would have been spun out by the car behind him. The same way he always gets hit at Daytona and Talladega !!!
Go 39 !!

Re: Neman vs Montoya

Ryan handled it correctly was he suppose to jam the brakes and cause a bigger accident after all this is racing . I think after video proven intentional rough driving SHR should send a bill for Ryans car . That kind of attitude doesnt belong in professional racing send ole juan to the clevland county speedway we will change him

Re: Neman vs Montoya

Also, after JPM's retaliation, Nascar warned him to "not go near the 39 again" according to the commentators who were listening to radio.

Nascar made Tony go to anger management, they better do it and soon with JPM or he may hurt someone bad!

Re: Neman vs Montoya

apparently all the Nascar shows are blaming Ryan & appaulding JPM. Of course the one I am watching right now has Brian France on it. These shows are a joke, when they cant just be themselves. I remember a year or two ago Nascar gave a show the what for, for speaking bad about them, & all of a sudden they changed their tune. Ryan didnt do anything wrong.
Seems like the only one that has remotely defended Ryan was Denny Hamlin. (who mainly talked about JPM)

Re: Neman vs Montoya

The only thing i seen is maybe Ryan got a little over aggressive, but there was no reason for Juans actions.Robin Miller was on Dave Dispains show and basicly said near the same thing i did about Juan and added" he always got away with it, while Paul Tracey didn't in open wheel".Juan is still getting away with it and he has %issed off alot more drivers than just Ryan in Cup over the years.

Re: Neman vs Montoya

If Tony and / or Ryan asked other drivers they are really good friends with if they might be willing to spin JPM out with them at a track here and a track there, if they would do it.

Found this on Yahoo Sports this morning:

Montoya: Issues with Newman were settled on track

By PETE IACOBELLI, AP Sports Writer
May 5, 2:32 pm EDT

FLORENCE, South Carolina (AP)—Juan Pablo Montoya says his issues with fellow NASCAR driver Ryan Newman were settled on the track at Richmond last week.

Montoya and Newman were involved in two separate on-track incidents at Richmond International Raceway, and Newman talked of payback after the race. The two had no confrontation, however.

“For me, I think everything was settled on the race track,” Montoya said on Thursday.

Montoya was playing in a golf tournament honoring late NASCAR executive and former Darlington Raceway President Jim Hunter.

Montoya, the pole-sitter at Richmond International Raceway, brushed the wall the first time he tangled with Newman and lost three laps in the pits as the damage was fixed.

Montoya said Newman could’ve lifted off the throttle and avoided contact. Newman wouldn’t have lost much time, plus Montoya said he was “letting everybody by because my car wasn’t that great at the time. I felt (it was) totally unnecessary what he did.”

Later, Montoya ran into he back of Newman when Newman was in eighth place.

“I’ve been wrecked by him a lot of times,” Montoya said, “and I’ve never done anything about it.”

Newman went to the NASCAR hauler after the race to complain about Montoya. “To retaliate the way he did just didn’t show much class,” Newman said last weekend.

There’s been some history between the two, including contact that led to a fiery crash for Montoya in his 2006 NASCAR debut at Homestead.

Montoya said it was pointless to discuss the incidents further. “You guys are looking for a story that is not there,” he said. “And that’s it.”

The Southern 500 runs at Darlington on Saturday. Newman stands eighth in the points heading into the weekend and Montoya 12th.
