Ryan Newman finished 3rd Saturday night at Richmond International Raceway but ended up 1-point shy of making the Chase. In a post-race interview Ryan Newman blamed missing the Chase on the performance of the #39 car throughout the year, especially his pit crew’s performance Saturday night.
“I told Matt when we came into this race that we couldn’t make up everything we’ve missed in the first 25 (races),” an upset Ryan Newman said. “Now winning would have changed everything and that last caution definitely hurt us, but we got killed on pit road, there’s no doubt about that.”
“Carl and those guys beat us on four tires. The guys that took two were just doing some strategy, but we should have been able to come off pit road first and come off pit road first if we were a championship contending team. We needed a championship contending pit crew, and we didn’t have that tonight.”
Ryan Newman will miss the Chase for the 3rd time since joining Stewart-Haas Racing in 2009. The other two years with Stewart-Haas Racing that Newman had missed the Chase were 2010 and 2012.
Ryan Newman will finish out the remaining 10 races of the season before leaving Stewart-Haas Racing at the end of 2013.
