Race Car Set Up Secrecy Mode?

Rochelle brought this up in one of my other posts and I find it interesting. She mentioned how Tony did not like Ryans car set ups. And, how Ryan didn't like Tonys.

You old Newman fans may remember the Penske feud between Team #2 and the #12 when old Rusty got a case of the "goo" about Matt doing something special with the carburetors that gave Team #12 an advantage. Rusty was so full of himself and was very jealous of the young apprentice Newman. Rusty was the "top dog" and didn't like being shown up on race day. So what does he do....he whines to the media about Matts little secret. You guys know, you just don't do that!

My point is. Maybe all three race teams with S/H should operate independently and see what happens? I know this sounds radical and un-family like but may be necessary. It may be Zipadelli calling the shots in sharing the set ups but who knows?

What do you guys think?

P.S. Not sure what is going on with this site? There is no email notification doo hicky or subscribe any more. Did they not pay their bills or what?

Re: Race Car Set Up Secrecy Mode?

I thought I heard that Tony and Ryan used pretty much the same setups on the shorter flatter tracks - such as Martinsville and New Hampshire. Phoenix, I thought they would have used similar also but not sure - their speeds were close in practice/quals. The speedways, is where they go different.

To me I think they should be sharing everything and I've been saying for awhile Ryan should use Tony's setups more if he isn't already. The track record and wins are there, so whatever Tony is doing seems to have the capability, but the driving styles are different. The way they enter corners, use brakes, etc. has an affect. Ryan actually tends to go deeper into a corner before braking or letting off, and the car can feel tighter because it won't want to turn. And if they go too loose it will feel really loose when charging in like that. Whereas I've heard Tony has more of a touch on a loose setup, knows how to ease into a corner better and can make a looser setup work.

Re: Race Car Set Up Secrecy Mode?

Knowing what goes on at Hendricks.....they share everything with SHR and visa versa plus what went on in the past at SHR and throw Zippy into that mix.....secrets won't happen! That just divides teammates and there isn't any reason for it. SHR also has hired a separate racing test team, so why pay for something extra that would benefit all if you were trying to hide something. Different drivers have different set ups but there is a sign at SHR that says there is no" I in TEAM...!
Look how well that worked at Penske....no Championship until this year when they started sharing things.

Re: Race Car Set Up Secrecy Mode?

no way should they keep secrets. That eliminates all the advantages of having a multi car team.
Difference with Ryans team & Rusty, was Rusty refused to change to what was considered radical set ups back then. It was just evolution where cars & set ups were going to then. Rusty was Rusty's problem back then.

Tony likes a looser car & Ryan likes a tighter car. Danica right now needs a tighter car. They still share notes even though they have diferent set ups. In fact ryan & Tony often ask during the races how the other guy car is handling during the race. Tony gave a lot of credit to Ryan during Tonys championship chase run. If they kept secrets, I believe all of them would suffer (not help)

Re: Race Car Set Up Secrecy Mode?

From what I have read it seems what everyone has been saying is what I also have heard for the last few years. I think SHR shares all their info. Last year, there was some concern within the Hendrick camp that SHR wasn't exactly sharing all their information. But Tony and Ryan are very open about sharing setups, its just that both drivers are looking for completely different feelings with their setups. From what I have heard, yes, Ryan likes to run it deep into the turns, while Tony on the hand likes to tap the brakes a bit and float it in to get the car into a controlled slide just before entering the turns. It's similar to a lot of dirt track NASCAR drivers (ie Bowyer, Kahne & Edwards). Ryan doesn't have that line into the turn for that to completely work out for him. So I think the original question is not a concern amongst SHR.

one of the things tony does like is that he & Ryan use different setups. Gives the brainiacs at SHR more information to make changes to ones set ups or the others when things arent working for one or the other. Instead of them both working on the same or similar setups. (getting less information)
Sharing info is key for a teams success.

Re: Race Car Set Up Secrecy Mode?

Do you guys really think Hendrick would share pertinent info with teams other than his. I mean, would Chad seriously tell his secrets? In my opinion, no way!

If Hendrick was really sharing info. Why is all his teams(other than the #48) not as successful? Just saying..........

Re: Race Car Set Up Secrecy Mode?

Hendrick shares up to a point. I believe SHR is expected to share all their info with Hendrick. We may not like it, but lets face it, SHR wouldn't exactly be running this well if it weren't for Hendrick Motorsports and their equipment. So I'm sure realistically 80% of HMS info gets shared with SHR, but I believe Mr. H expects 100% info from SHR.

HMS shares a ton with SHR, it is a well known fact that tony and his CC sit in on weekly meetings, especially during the chase.

Re: Race Car Set Up Secrecy Mode?

We could debate this subject all day but in the end it's up to the driver to make it all happen and cross the finish line first to get the checkers. As much as the guy irratates me Chad should keep his secrets to himself if he so desires. Now if some of that is cheating then let him get fined and sit out a few races.
