I think you're right. Starting in the back doesn't really hurt at this track. It all depends on how good (or bad) the backup car is. Of course, after watching the Duels, passing seems to be a problem. If Ryan can't find a partner, he could stay in the back, or worse, get lapped.
There is one more practice on Saturday, so maybe we'll see what kind of car he's got.

should've went to a backup prior to today's race, that car just looked anemic today and Ryan couldn't seem to keep it under control. They never showed what happened on that second lap, but he never recovered. Could be a bad sign...oh well. Hopefully Ryan doesn't get himself shuffled out too often on Sunday because this car just goes nowhere and everyone just wants to follow the leader single-file. Painful to watch

Well, Newman's theme so far is "round and round we go where she stops nobody knows!"
Folks, if you have been following Ryan for years. His luck at this track has been historically HORRIBLE! All we can hope is he will break this fricken trend some how?
The drivers are going through a learning curve with this Gen 6 car very obviously.
Newman will be in Row17 next to Bayne. Just finish the race please Ryan!

I'm with ya Schmoopy! Newman should just automatically make his 'back up" car the faster of the two cars every year! That seems to be the car he end up with year after year!

I think this is a good call, better to start in the back with a car that has no damage then to start closer to the front and have an issue with some of the damage that the car already has. Ryan can get any car back to the front.

Ryan out in this morning's practice for the first time in his backup car. Only 11 cars have gone out (to this point) and Ryan is 11th.
SHR Tweet (Ryan's radio communication to Matt Borland): "For whatever reason, it won't get out of its own way. Coming to you," reports Newman.

During today's last practice, Ryan ended up 9th of 22 cars that went out. They will now change out to their race engine for Sunday.

well, at least he'll have a fresh car and engine for the 500, most of the field will have a few hundred miles on theirs already. Not that these engines get overworked here with the limited rpms though.
The plus I see with this car and rules package in place now is that people won't be able to hang back anymore, we could see more packs like in the first duel race as you would think drivers won't want to settle to fall back in a huge single-file line.
So hopefully Ryan makes moves early and gets up there, if he gets wrecked, well its pretty much to be expected anyway. I still say he finishes higher than Danica -

all teams can change engines before last practice if they want, this is the only race where they are allowed to do so....

Ryans only hope now is to at least "finish" the race. Now if he can survive all the normal drama of Daytona. His next major problem will be getting a drafting buddy. Newman doesn't have a lot of friends and I can't understand why that is? Lot of racers egos..........

#### this whole time when cars were practicing close to each other, I would see Tony & Danica together. Never saw Ryan with any SHR cars at all this week. Granted I havent seen every practice so who knows.

Things looked good for him at the start of the week but dang the last couple days have been about like Carl and Mark's whole Speedweeks.
