Many of you remember this wreck... I remember being in the SHR chatroom when it all went down. All who were there were going bat crap crazy not knowing what was going on inside the car, and if Ryan was ok. During this wreck the greenhouse of the car collapsed pushing against Ryan's helmet as he hung upside down. Thankfully Ryan does not have a neck or it might have been broken.
So I was watching Pre season practice from Daytona a few weeks ago. They did a special feature of all the new safety features in the new Gen 6 cars. They talked about the larger roof flaps, the mini parachute type deal inside the roof flap, the lower rear bumpers, and they discussed a new addition to the roll cage of the car.... NASCAR has added a bar to the car that goes from the halo bar (the top of the roll cage) to the floor of the car to prevent the greenhouse from collapsing in the event of a roll over. They have named the bar "The Newman Bar". So Because of that horrific wreck in 2009 Many drivers should be safer in the future. I tried to find out how much imput Ryan had in it's development, but was unable to get an answer. I think it's awesome that even after Ryan decides to hang up his helmet a part of him will remain in the sport.

Your right 8Ballin! Newman was the qualifying master at one time but the thrill was gone when his finishes stunk!8Ballin wrote:well at least Ryan's one of the few drivers locked in to the 500 on his qualifying time, even if he does get snake-bit in the Thursday race. Will be interesting to see in this year without the top 35 rule which big names may fail to make certain races.
As far as his legacy, I hate to think a newly-engineered roof is what he'd be remembered for, I still think he is best known as a qualifying ace, I'd really like to see him and Borland concentrate more on that this year, at least reach this 50 milestone. Heck if Cotton Owens can get in the hall of fame with 9 wins, what about 16 wins and 50 poles?
