Ryan's Legacy

Many of you remember this wreck... I remember being in the SHR chatroom when it all went down. All who were there were going bat crap crazy not knowing what was going on inside the car, and if Ryan was ok. During this wreck the greenhouse of the car collapsed pushing against Ryan's helmet as he hung upside down. Thankfully Ryan does not have a neck or it might have been broken.

So I was watching Pre season practice from Daytona a few weeks ago. They did a special feature of all the new safety features in the new Gen 6 cars. They talked about the larger roof flaps, the mini parachute type deal inside the roof flap, the lower rear bumpers, and they discussed a new addition to the roll cage of the car.... NASCAR has added a bar to the car that goes from the halo bar (the top of the roll cage) to the floor of the car to prevent the greenhouse from collapsing in the event of a roll over. They have named the bar "The Newman Bar". So Because of that horrific wreck in 2009 Many drivers should be safer in the future. I tried to find out how much imput Ryan had in it's development, but was unable to get an answer. I think it's awesome that even after Ryan decides to hang up his helmet a part of him will remain in the sport.

That crash made my skin crawl when it happened live. I don't think I'll watch it again even though I know the outcome was OK for Ryan.

well Ryan was fined 50k for speaking his mind after that wreck. So maybe they decided that since he helped fund the research  they might as well name after him.
The erie thing about that wreck was before the race they had done a bit on the dangers the drivers have & what the wives goes through. Krissie Newman was one of them that they had talked too. Then by the end of the race showed her hurrying to the in-care field center not looking to happy.
I was just happy Harvicks car was their to cushion some of the force when it 1st landed on the roof.

Ryan has made so many Nascar "highlight" video spectaculars since 2000. They could run a good half hour special on it! This is the main reason he hasn't been able to complete a racing season into a Championship or even make the Chase! :? I know because I haven't missed a single televised race since 2001 of Ryan Newman and that includes all his racing outside of Nascar! 8-)

I think there are so many things that can go wrong at any given race. You most definitely have to have some sort of "good luck" seriously. And for what ever reason, Ryan seems to be the proverbial "snake bitten" race car driver on many occasions. I don't have the statistics because I don't need them. This is factual! It's not just the wrecks either. Tire and mechanical failure as well. :?

If all Newman needed was two laps to win a Championship. You would have to hold your breath! He would have the luck of a hot dog wrapper getting caught in his grill causing his car to over heat and loose at the end of the race! I kid you not! I have seen it folks!(not for a Championship) :D

So, you can have a perfectly balanced race car. Pit crew turning 12 second pit stops. Excellent crew chief strategy and the driver perfect on his marks. But if you don't have good racing luck........none of the above matters! :D :D

well at least Ryan's one of the few drivers locked in to the 500 on his qualifying time, even if he does get snakebit in the Thursday race. Will be interesting to see in this year without the top 35 rule which big names may fail to make certain races.

As far as his legacy, I hate to think a newly-engineered roof is what he'd be remembered for, I still think he is best known as a qualifying ace, I'd really like to see him and Borland concentrate more on that this year, at least reach this 50 milestone. Heck if Cotton Owens can get in the hall of fame with 9 wins, what about 16 wins and 50 poles?

Your right 8Ballin! Newman was the qualifying master at one time but the thrill was gone when his finishes stunk!

As far as the snake-bit title for Newman. I'm always saying,"Have to wait and see" because of that very reason. It's truly amazing!

Shoot... why not? LOL Rusty is still remembered for the roof flaps that were engineered around him and his flying #2 MGD! LOL

I just watched the video again and I still can't believe he got out of the wreck without severe injuries. The thing that bugs me no end is that NASCAR IN ALL OF IT'S GLORY fined him for speaking his mind. Time wise it had been less than 20 minutes if that long since he'd seen his life flash before him and they had the gall to be upset over his opinion. Now back in old school when something like that happened they didn't have a circus of reporters shoving a mike in their face. I can imagine the language some of those men used. This is my opinion but does NASCAR need money thar bad?
