HOMESTEAD, Fla. – A team captained by Ryan Newman won the 10th Annual Hot Rods & Reels Charity Fishing Tournament with NASCAR Drivers at the Homestead-Miami Speedway on Saturday, November 17. The event benefits the Darrell Gwynn Foundation. The Darrell Gwynn Foundation’s mission is to provide SUPPORT for people with paralysis and PREVENT spinal cord injuries.

Ryan Newman’s team of Jeff Smith, Kimberly Meesters and Jim Boldman won the tournament with a combined weight of 7.00lbs. bass. Driver Kenny Schrader caught the biggest fish of the day, a 5.12lbs largemouth bass.
“I always love this event said,” said Ryan Newman. “I don’t do charity golf tournaments (laughs), but I love to fish and Darrell (Gwynn) has an amazing charity fishing tournament that I’m always happy to be a part of. The work Darrell and his foundation do is amazing.”
Several of NASCAR’s top drivers, owners and stars participated in this year’s event including Ryan
Newman, Tony Stewart, Jamie McMurray, Joey Coulter, Martin Truex, Max Papis, David Reagan, Joe Nemechek, Austin Dillon, Darrell Waltrip, Bobby Labonte, Kenny Schrader, Richard Childress, Johnny Morris and more.
At the event, the Darrell Gwynn Foundation, on behalf of its donors and supporters, donated a $40,000 custom power wheelchair to 4 year-old Owen Johnson of Palm Bay, Fla. Owen was severely injured in a tragic car accident in July 2011 while his family was on vacation. His sister, Hannah, was killed in the accident while his pregnant mother, father and two other sisters were badly injured. The wheelchair donation was made through the foundation’s national Wheelchair Donation Program and will give Owen the gift of mobility. Fans can “Give the Gift of Mobility” and support the foundation’s Wheelchair Donation Program by visiting http://www.darrellgwynnfoundation.org.
In addition to raising spinal cord injury awareness and purchasing custom power wheelchairs for children and young adults, a portion of the money is donated to the “Speediatrics” unit at
Homestead Hospital. This special unit, which is brightly decked out in a racing theme, helps children and families feel more comfortable amid what can be stressful circumstances.
