Dammit!

Ryan would have finished 3rd today if he didnt run out of gas on the last lap. Still reeled in a 9th however so not the end of the world. Gibson told him we arent getting near as good of mileage as tony (congrats to Tony BTW) which ended up being huge in the end. Ryan tried to save fuel the whole last run & still ran out on the last lap. Ryan mentioned after the race thanks the car was good, we just need to work on the fuel mileage more. We were horrible there. those 6 points could be huge later on in the chase. Good news was Ryan had a good car on a cookie cutter. Of course he always does better on the flatter tracks, but still aero & motor packages are king on cookie cutters, so I still take that as some good news.

Re: Dammit!

when they listed all the drivers that ran out of fuel (basically at the same time), I also said "dammit"

then when I heard where he finished, I said "whew!"

Re: Dammit!

I know it is only a matter of one point, but NASCAR has Ryan listed in 8th as of right now.

Re: Dammit!

Kenseth crossed the line first but cuz Yeley pushed him NASCAR scored Matt 21st. So Ryan gets an 8th place finish. Another top 10!! Way to go Team #39!!

Sweet, about time Nascar makes that call. I was watching my pit command & listening to Ryans radio at work so I was unaware of Kenseth being assisted on the last lap. Cool, so now we only lost 5 points for running out of gas. If JJ didnt run out of gas we would have finished 4th (instead of 3rd) so I am just gonna act like we only lost 4 pts LOL

yeah before that last caution SHR was 1 & 2. After pitting Ryan was 5th. So they were looking good, even if there was a fuel mileage race.

Re: Dammit!

Just a little off topic .... if Kenseth didn't ask for someone to push him, should he really be penalized? I mean, if Yeley was just trying to be helpful, well good for him, but Matt got screwed over someone else's actions when he didn't ask for the help. Maybe I missed something in that part of it, just wondered.
Go Ryan!

You have to cross the finish line under your own power regardless,is all i know for sure.Regardless,i was a little put out about it myself and Kenseth is the only Roush driver i like,so i tend to side with him right or wrong. Years past,i have seen drivers push other drivers to the finish line,so it is a little confusing as they seem to change the rules more often than not.
Harvick may as well bring the #29 with him,he's bringing all the sponsors!
#2 #29 #39

Re: Dammit!

they said on the race hub that matt was going to finish in 20th for losing gas in turn one and coasted, so one position isnt that big of a deal.......
i know the rule bein you have to finish the whole last lap under your power, the slightest push will send you to the back of the lead lap, it was brught up on speed last year when they talked about harry gant winning dega in 91, many thought rick mast pushed him the final lap.

well Rick Mast did push him that last lap. Also I was trying to point out Kenseth would have finished way back there too, so good reporting MJ.

My question is, what is the exact wording on the rule for not pushing on the final lap? Because it could be quite possible there is a lot of illlegal pushing going on on the plate tracks nowadays LOL (front car is definitely being assisted)

Speaking of pushing on the plate tracks, has anybody seen this:

NASCAR tries to break up Talladega 2-car tandems

By JENNA FRYER, AP Auto Racing Writer

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—NASCAR tweaked two rules for next month’s race at Talladega Superspeedway, apparently in an effort to limit the two-car tandem racing that has dominated at its two fastest tracks.

The first change ordered Wednesday was an increase in the size of the restrictor plate that will be used in the Oct. 23 race. The larger holes in the carburetor plates should lead to an increase of horsepower that could make the cars 2 to 3 mph faster.

NASCAR also ordered an adjustment on the pop-off valve in the cooling system that should lower the maximum water temperature in engines. A threat of overheating could prevent cars from staying hooked together for too long.

Drivers discovered over the last year that it’s faster to run at Daytona and Talladega in two-car tandems. That style has replaced the popular two- and three-wide packs, and fans have been lukewarm about the tandem racing.

Now, two cars hook up bumper-to-bumper, one clearly pushing the other until the potential for overheating forces them to separate and then swap. It’s made for record lead changes and exciting finishes, but is a totally different style than the white-knuckle pack racing fans loved.

Drivers, meanwhile, said it’s impossible to see anything when they are pushing another car and Dale Earnhardt Jr., NASCAR’s most popular driver, has repeatedly railed against tandem racing.

“What kind of move can you make in racing like this?” he asked in July. “There ain’t no move you can make. You just hold it on the mat and try not to wreck into each other.”

NASCAR vice president of competition Robin Pemberton made no mention of the tandem racing in explaining the rule changes.

“After the last few superspeedway races, we’ve heard many drivers express their desire to open up the size of the restrictor plate some and we thought the time was right to do that,” Pemberton said in a statement. “We anticipate these revisions in the rules package for Talladega will help continue to provide competitive and exciting racing for the fans.”

The larger restrictor plate could push speeds over 200 mph, but the combination of the pop-off valve change likely means the cars won’t be able to stay locked together for as many laps. David Reutimann crew chief Rodney Childers thinks drivers might be limited to a lap of pushing before needing to swap.

“Changing the plates will be better,” Childers said. “It should make it more racy, where you can pull out and pass. If they are wanting to make it where people can’t draft as long, it’s going to do that. Probably only a half of a lap or a lap is all you’re going to get out of it.”

Chad Johnston, crew chief for Martin Truex Jr., predicted that drivers will have to swap positions more. That could make it dicey, he said, because drivers will have to swap while also avoiding the two-car packs closing in behind them.

“The chances of something going wrong on a swap are going to go up obviously, but hopefully it will eliminate or lessen the two-by-two racing,” he said.
