Stewart Undergoes Third Surgery on Leg

Mon Oct 07, 2013 11:53 am

KANNAPOLIS, N.C., (Oct. 7, 2013) – NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Tony Stewart underwent a third surgery on his right leg early on Monday, Oct. 7 to examine and close a wound on his shin stemming from the broken tibia and fibula he sustained in a sprint car crash Aug. 5 at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

Stewart will remain hospitalized for observation.

The surgery served as a proactive measure and team officials do not expect it to impact Stewart’s return to the No. 14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1 Chevrolet in 2014.

Stewart’s first surgery on Aug. 6 in Iowa served as a preliminary procedure to stabilize and clean the Grade 2 injury. The second surgery on Aug. 8, by a specialist in North Carolina, involved inserting a metal rod inside the tibia, pressing it to its anatomic position

I had a feeling something was up when we didn't see him at Kansas..... :( I wonder if the was an infection in the leg and that is why it wasn't healing.....prayers for you, Tony!

Annalee don't freak out. Sometimes the doctors leave open a wound like that for just in case purposes and also to make sure that healing of the inner layers are going well and have no complications. (My mom's doctors did that to her on her surgery.) So now that they are going in and closing it to me is a good sign.

i had the same thing done to my back, so it could drain any bad fluids out of the body

As others have said, should be nothing to worry about. The doctors probably left it that way, on purpose, to drain. Now they've closed it up so the outer layers of skin can heal over.

It's all good. :D

Since Tony had deep wounds I'm not surprise they left it to be closed later. They didn't want an abcess to form. I've had that and it is not fun. Tony did say a short time ago that he had had a hiccup but nothing serious that would slow things down.

I sure hope you all are right...... :? The last picture of him I thought that the leg looked a little swollen....maybe they are closing the wound because of his physical therapy......Hope so!

AS long as he heals and gets healthy. Sounds like its a typical part of recovery.

Since Tony's accident and how serious the injury was I suppose we can expect to find out several things he has to go thru. I'm sure he has the best medical care and doctors to take care of him. I think he looks great but just not the sassy Tony we expect to see. The stress he's under just to beable to race in February must be way more than a person can imagine. I just wish him a healthy recovery.

According to some people this is a ridiculous rumor...Kevin's sponsorship is nearly full (34 races covered) - if it weren't for Jimmie Johns committing to 12 races it may have been different, Tony's car is pretty covered as well, what I heard is NAPA was only interested in Tony and Kevin, hard to imagine they would leave MWR because of the controversy to join up with Kurt Busch. But perhaps NAPA comes over as a partial sponsor for some races. A number of teams are working on them now though.
