Petty won 95 more races than Pearson, buuuuuuuut, he ran 610 MORE races.
Petty...1184 races....Pearson 574 races.
Petty...200 wins....Pearson 105 wins
Petty...555 T5 finishes....Pearson 301 T5 finishes
Petty...712 T10 finishes....Pearson 366 T10 finishes
Petty...123 Poles....Pearson....113 Poles.....

Plus, if I'm not mistaken....Pearson only ran a full season 5 years.

I thought he only ran three full seasons (& has three championships)
I know this too. Pearson is the only driver in Nascar that can say head to head he has beaten all of his competition more than they beat him.

Pearson's record is amazing. Only 3 full seasons and won three championships in them. But it's hard to put him ahead of a 7 time champion.

SS 14, here is another stat you might want to add to the list:

14 consecutive years that Tony has had a win in NASCAR cup series from ESPN sports.

If you do some extrapolating.....it isn't REALLY that hard to put David Pearson in front of Richard Petty.......according to calculations using averages, if Pearson had run as many races as Petty, he'd have 217 wins. I know it doesn't matter with the what ifs but its always cool to run the numbers and actually see a true comparison according to the true numbers and not just an opinion or two from somebody in the booth.

Here's a little more to think about using averages......

had Pearson run a full schedule all his years, he would've had 620 T5 finishes, 755 T10 finishes and a WHOPPING 213 Poles. I gotta say..... "The Silver Fox" is REALLY "The King"

Re: Tony closing in on 50 career wins

There's no mistaken David Pearson as the greatest Nascar driver ever! The most talented driver ever i'd go with Dale Earnhardt Snr.,if not the most talented,at least the most exciting.Cale Yarborough brought on alot of excitement as well and like Dale had no fear of putting a race car where most drivers wouldn't.
Kyle and Brad pretty much appear to be the Dale and or Cale of today, thou times may change their attitudes and talent are just what the sport needs, talent w/o reservation!
Tony has how many wins in Cup, unlike the media i like to keep each series seperate as each series is just that.Tony,Jeff and JJ didn't do squat their first year in the Bush Series, take that into consideration if you want to combine all three series.Tony and Kevin each have a championship in IROC where Jeff and JJ don't,so how do you compare drivers today in this era? The only way i can find it personally,is who can and will go above the norm and i guess that's the way i always looked at it.Most any driver can win with a dominate team,i like to look outside that. ;)

Re: Tony closing in on 50 career wins

Tony winning for 14 straight seasons is a very impressive stat, 2nd on that list is Kurt Busch.

David Pearson is one of the greatest of all time. His record speaks for itself, and who knows, probably was better then Petty. If he had ran more seasons, he could perhaps be right behind Earnhardt. But he didn't.

Don't get me wrong, if I was a car owner back in the 70s, I would hire Pearson over anyone. He is the definition of a wheelman.
Cup: 14, 1, 29, 88, 99, 11, 17, 39, 15, 5, 2, 16

Trucks: 9, 88, 3, 7, 17, 31
