Re: Chili Bowl Info

Speed TV just announced Tony will be hanging around Daytona thru Sat morn's practice to do some drafting with Danica. So hopefully he still makes it back for the A-main Sat night in the Chili Bowl.

Re: Chili Bowl Info

They did a fair amount of drafting today, ended up 11th and 12th. Some pack racing as well showed very high speeds. Wonder what Nascar will change again for Sat.? 8-)

Stewart 10th; Swindell wins Chili Bowl

TULSA, Okla. (AP)—NASCAR star Tony Stewart returned from two days of testing at Daytona to finish 10th in the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals, while Kevin Swindell led wire-to-wire in the 55-lap main event en route to his third consecutive title Saturday night.

A record crowd of 17,227 watched Swindell, from Germantown, Tenn., easily edge father Sammy Swindell, a five-time champion, in the indoor Midget event on the 1/5-mile dirt oval at QuikTrip Center.

“My focus is not on NASCAR this week, but doing well in Tulsa,” the three-time Sprint Cup champion said. “This is a small track and that’s what makes this event so cool.

“It’s about the car and engine combination. You don’t have to have the baddest car out there, but to win you have to be spot on. One mistake will catch up with you.”

After starting 10th, Stewart made no errors, but couldn’t advance on a night where cars played follow the leader. Kevin Swindell was chased all the way by his father, who started behind him in the second row. Kyle Larson of Elk Grove, Calif., finished third.

“You have to be ready to go because your preparation here is not like anywhere else,” Stewart said. “I hadn’t been in a Midget in two or three years until Tuesday. The first time I drove the car was in the Race of Champions, but I’ve got really good guys working on it and they changed a lot of things on it. Still, it’s not a perfect car and it can be much better than it was.”

Stewart said he was looking forward to the event following a four-year absence, proclaiming the race one of his favorite events.

“There is pressure here,” Stewart said. “You have World of Outlaws drivers, winged drivers and every top Midget driver. There is a lot of pressure to make the `A’ main and you have to be pretty satisfied you got there.”

Stewart, the 2002 and 2007 Chili Bowl champion, finished seventh Tuesday night in the Race of Champions, second in his heat race on Wednesday crossed third in the 25-lap `A’ main qualifying race.

Kevin Swindell recorded his third victory in four Chili Bowl starts and has never placed out of the top 10.

“It’s nice to win here,” Swindell said. “I don’t get to race a whole lot in the year and this is a good way to start. It’s nice to make sure I’ve still got my ability and maybe somebody will call me (to drive) next week.”

Sammy Swindell finished second for the second straight year.

“I was able to get to the corners better, but he was able to get off them,” he said. “Sometimes, I had a good run, but there was no place to go. Traffic can make the difference.”

The main event, scheduled for 50 laps, was extended an additional five to honor Donnie Ray Crawford’s No. 55. Crawford, a Broken Arrow, Okla., resident, was scheduled to complete in the Chili Bowl on Saturday night, but was killed in a domestic dispute earlier in the day.

Re: Chili Bowl Info

Well, I'm home safe and sound from the Chili Bowl. It was an eventful week. Unfortunately, not all the events were happy ones. Learning of Donnie Ray Crawford's death Saturday morning gave everybody reason to stop and reflect.

There are two young drivers from Illinois that I have made friends with over my years at the Chili Bowl. One of them won two races Thursday night, but didn't do too well in his A qualifier. He started in the D main on Saturday, but didn't make it into the C main. All in all, he had a pretty good week. The other driver I'm friends with was seriously injured in the races Friday night. He had to spend the night in the hospital Friday night, and didn't make it back to the races on Saturday. However, after good test results, he was released from the hospital on Saturday and headed for home. He will recuperate from his injuries and hopefully will be racing when the new season starts.

Really enjoyed watching Tony and his team throughout the week. Wish they had done better in the races. Since I have been attending the Chili Bowl, I have only seen drivers named Swindell win on Saturday night. Stewart would have been a nice name in the winner's circle. LOL

Smokesgal14, I hoped I would see you on Saturday night. What happened girl?

Even with the sadness of the events, I'm already planning on going in 2013 if at all possible. There really isn't anything like the Chili Bowl.

Re: Chili Bowl Info

Does anyone know for sure if the Chili Bowl replay will be on CBS mail channel or CBS Sports channel? CBS Sports is a premium channel for me, so I don't get it. And what if anything will be on SPEED? I didn't see any SPEED people this year, but I could have missed them.

Swindell fan myself,i'd sure like to know what they have that no one else has? Will agree,i don't like seeing the same drivers win races all the time either.

Fortunately there is a great deal more to the Chili Bowl than just the A Main on Saturday night. As much as I want to see someone else win, I'll keep going back as long as I can, for a week of racing fun!

Re: Chili Bowl Info

The Great American Trashcan Escapade of 2012

by Phyllis Skidmore, P³
(Powered Pit Pest)

Editor's Note: The names and numbers have been changed to protect the innocent.

She came out of the dark of night, no wait, it was afternoon. And its never dark at the Chili Bowl. Anyway, she was a small gray headed woman. I won't say she was old, but she was older than me, so I wasn't going to say anything to her. She didn't say “boo” to anybody, she just grabbed our trashcan and drug it away. She took it across the aisle and down between two pit trailers.

Now my job is unofficial, ceremonial, and unpaid (except for all the food I can eat). But I sit some of the day and most of the night, and watch the races on the jumbo tron. My duties include “watching” over the food table and accompanying trashcan. I test the food, then inform those who come to eat what is available and how good it is. I also inform passers by that the food is not for the public and cannot be purchased. I might even slap a hand reaching from the wrong side of the table now or then. I also keep an eye on the trashcan and the drink box.

The trashcan had been gone for about an hour when MM, the owner of the team I watch over, came to the trashcan with some trash and all most threw it on the bare floor where the can should have been. “Where's our trashcan?” was his excited response. I informed him they had taken it across the aisle. I wasn't going to tell him it was taken by a little old lady that scared me. He asked where over there and I said they took it to the other side of the #9z car.

Additional Editor's Note: As with all racing stories, this one has been embellished for the sake of interest.

MM wasn't having any of that. He crossed the aisle and started rubber necking the pits of #9z and #29q next to it. MM is pretty long and lanky, so when he starts rubber necking, people notice. A white haired gentleman, who would look like Santa Clause if he had a beard, from the #29q pit, asked MM what the problem was. MM continued to rubber neck and point his Richard Petty length finger down between the two trailers as he spoke. Santa said he understood and a frustrated MM crossed the aisle back to his own pit.

Several minutes later, Santa crossed the aisle to the MM pit, dragging the aforementioned trashcan. Upon being met at the flags around the MM pit by MM himself, Santa's first words were, “it wasn't my crew, it was that other team!”

Cordial words were exchanged between MM and Santa as the world returned to normal, thanks to Santa saving the day.

Author's Note: In the interest of clarity and fairness it should be noted that the infamous trashcan, star of this tale, did not belong to MM and his team. It was provided and frequently emptied, free of charge, by the outstanding staff of the 26th Annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl. Always stop and think before you abuse a trashcan.
