KS Storms and Racing

Sun May 22, 2011 2:56 pm

Never a dull moment when NHRA (or NASCAR) come to Kansas.

Yesterday afternoon storms made their way across the state.
Here's 2 pics taken in Reading (south of Topeka) after the storm had passed.

Antron snapped these pics before seeking shelter yesterday at Heartland Park in Topeka.

I'm one of the last people to seek shelter at the track because I'm watching the storm, but I do make sure my mom is safely undercover. :) I've seen lightning strike the infield over by turn 2 at KS Speedway. I've also watched race fans scatter has the tornado sirens went off when a tornado touched down in the Bonner Springs area, just a few minutes from the track.

Race weekends in Kansas wouldn't be complete without some severe weather.

Wow on the pictures. Glad everyone was ok. I don't know if I could stand outside & capture a tornado myself, I'd be running for cover. Now my hubby on the other hand runs out to watch. Luckily of the 20 some yrs we've lived here, there's only been one funnel he's went outside to watch, it didn't touch down until a few miles past us.

While these storms can be very dangerous...They are very beautiful. At least you have a fair chance of spotting a tornado, cause with microbursts....they just hit. Heck, 4 years ago at about this time I was woke up by one. It struck the same time my weather alarm went off. Good timing huh?

Here's a couple more pics.

The lightning was fun to watch as well.Image

we just had a major dust storm (because the farmers just recently planted their crops, thus disturbing the top layer of soil into a fine dust) followed by a severe thunderstorm.
I was out in the barn, and couldn't see the house.

[i]I second the WOW. I'm so afraid of this type of weather all they have to do is start the sirens and I'm long gone. I don't leave my hiding place until the all clear. We just received an e-mail from a cousin who has family in Joplin,MO who were extremely lucky to escape the damage on their house but lost a business building. I've never looked outside or took pictures during a storm so I have to give credit to the storm chasers. Blessing to all those involved.....

I agree the storms in Kansas are bad, but I am quite use to it. When the sirens went off today I hit my basement and my friend (who is from Joplin, MO) called to see if I was okay. My prayers go out to her! :) I am happy to see that there wasn't as much damage as there could have been. Brace yourselves Kansas!
