I love trains and grew up not too far from the train track that went from Chicago to Detroit. It was always busy. My grandfather was a conductor on a New York Central freight train and an uncle was a fireman on the freight train also. So we always heard all the stories. I love traveling on a train except when changing trains in Chicago for one going to Detroit and our train was late coming from Kansas City. Never ran so fast in my life.

My only Amtrak experience has been two round trips from Central Illinois to New Orleans on spring break in college. The second time, we got stuck for 5 hours near Jackson, Mississippi because of trees down across the tracks. I listened to Illinois defeat Arizona in the Elite 8 basketball tourney via cell phone with a friend who put their phone next to the radio in the lounge car with 6 other friends. I'll never forget that game, or train ride.

Re: That beautiful view where you are or have been

I have two Uncles...that use to chase steam engine trains in the late 70's early 80's....just to take pictures. There were a lot of train enthusiasts who would travel miles to do this.. When I was little he would take me to the round house in Fresno Ca and we would get to ride in the locomotives as the trains changed position..he worked for the Southern Pacific as a conductor, etc.

One of my favorite vacations was a train trip from Chicago to Portland....we had a sleeping car...it was so much fun to sit back and just watch the world go by...We made some life long friends on that trip.....sooo relaxing...no phones, no Internet, no TV...Great time!

Years ago, Mrs HH & I took the Alaska Railroad from Fairbanks thru Denali NP to Anchorage. Beautiful, peaceful trip. Great scenery.

This is a picture of the blue bonnets in bloom at our old house. I seeded the entire back pasture to bloom and let me tell you there is nothing more beautiful to a Texan.

Re: That beautiful view where you are or have been

I LOVE BLUEBONNETS!! When they were in bloom the highway between San Antonio and Austin was a sea of blue!! I think Lady Bird Johnson was responsible for enhancing the highways of Texas with the BLUEBONNETS.......

Re: That beautiful view where you are or have been

Lady Bird was indeed responsible for seeing that our highways were made beautiful with wild flowers. We have a place in Texas called Wildseed Farms where anyone in different areas of the country can by seeds for their area. Give their website a look if you are interested.

Doc....I think I am a Texas girl at heart! Do you think bluebonnets would grow in NC? I think I might have to give that a try!

I'll check it out for you and let you know.

They have blue bonnets in blue and maroon color. The guys at Texas A&M invented the maroon...Gig Em Aggies!
