Baseball

Once the MLB season starts, this can be our baseball topic. Right now, though, I wanna get on my soapbox.

Hammerin' Hank Aaron, the all-time Home Run King (yeah I said it) was on Studio B with Shepherd Smith a little bit ago and they got to talking about why so few kids are playing the game. Hank was specifically talking about black kids, which makes sense since the number of black Major Leaguers has really gone down, but I wonder about all kids.

I can't help but wonder if we started taking these dumps around the country, I don't mean landfills, I mean these run-down dumpy areas, and turned them into baseball diamonds and put a bat and a ball in every kid's hand and a Braves cap, a Cubs cap, a Yankees cap, even a *gulp* Mets hat on their head, if it might not help the country in a way, you know, with morale. It's the Great American Pastime, and a beautiful game, and I think if we got all kids involved in it and truly made it our national game, it could go a long way.

Furthermore, it'd be nice if we could get the stadiums (and businesses around the stadiums) to work with fans on pricing. Baseball fans aren't rich. Baseball fans are simple American folks who love a great game. If it was less of an expense to go to a game, have a bite to eat and something to drink, and just enjoy the atmosphere of it all, people'd be a lot happier.

Okay I'll get off my soapbox. Go Braves.

Football seems to have overtaken baseball as the "national pastime."

Re: Baseball

Here's something fun we could do, since I saw that a lot of you like baseball teams.

Pick your dream 9-man starting lineup for your favorite team, among alumni. That's to say, fill each defensive position and pick your starting pitcher from that team's former players. Put an asterisk beside each player's name who is currently on that team's roster.

The rules: they have to have spent at least one full-season with that particular team (eliminates Mark Texieria for me, he was there from the '07 trade deadline to the '08 deadline) and they have to have been active within the last two decades but for at least the last three seasons if they're currently active. In other words, if they haven't played sometime since 1991 and or least since 2008 as an active player, they're inelligible.

Mine, of course, would be the Atlanta Braves

2B Martin Prado* #14
LF Ron Gant #5
3B Chipper Jones* #10
1B Fred McGriff #27
C Brian McCann* #16
CF Andruw Jones #25
RF David Justice #23
SS Jeff Blauser #4
P Greg Maddux #31

Did you know the Twins commisioned a bobblehead of that play? A BOBBLEHEAD!

I won't give you crap about Jimmie, but as a Twins fan, sorry bud. You're on the hit list.

I love the Braves. Followed them for years when John Smoltz pitched for them. John went to the same High School as my children did. He is very well liked here just as Earvin Johnson is. John doesn't get back as often as Magic does as his parents live in Detroit. Magic pops in alot as his parents do live here and he sees them often. He also is at Michigan State for one thing or another.

its funny you mentioned that bobble head, because only last nite was the first time i ever heard of that particular one, in fact they posted that pic on their website last, that was a brutal WS, i just remember game 6 when puckett hit that late inning home run ( god he was so clutch ). personally i cant believe the braves didnt win more WS with that line up.

i heard yesterday that hank steinbrenner wants to get rid of revenue sharing and let the big teams get bigger and the smaller market teams fold if they cant keep up, that will destroy baseball, i could think of 5 or 6 teams that would fold very quickly if he had his way.....
