Wild wreck

ELKHART LAKE,Wis.-Driver Joe Foster briefly was hospitalized after a crash with Gunter during a Grand Am race at Road America on Saturday that sent Schaldach's car flipping over a fence and into the woods.

Schaldach said he was "totally fine" after the spectacular accident, but Foster was airlifted to a Milwaukee-area hospital. He was evaluated and released from the hospital later Saturday afternoon.

The brakes on Schaldach's Caramaro malfunctioned and he plowed into the back of Fosters Mazda going into turn 1 at the four-mile road course. Schaldach's car skidded at high speed through a runoff area and into a tirbarrier-then flipped completely over a retaining fence and into a wooded area behindthe turn.

Foster's car slammed into a tire barrier.

In a radio interview,Schaldach estimated his car was going about 160 mph when he wrecked.

"I hit the brake pedal and nothing happened," he said.

Re: Wild wreck

Yeah, I saw it. The wreck looked bad the way the car launched over the tire barrier and clipped the top of the retaining fence. He was lucky not to have been more seriously injured.

Re: Wild wreck

I know. He was very lucky. I'm sure the tires softened the impact a little, but still, 160mph!?!

Re: Wild wreck

He didn't even get a mark or nothing on him. I'd say God was with him.
