Heroes

Below is the link to a song I put on YouTube called "Hoppy's Gone." It was recorded by Roger Miller shortly after the death of William Boyd, who of course was famous for playing Hopalong Cassidy in so many western films. Though I've never seen an entire Hopalong Cassidy feature, the song struck me - and hard.

It's one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. It isn't about the death of love or the death of a dear friend or relative, but rather about the death of childood. The day Boyd passed - September 12, 1972 - was the day many childhoods died along with him, leaving only - as the song says - a lifetime of memories.

Being born in 1986, I haven't had the opportunity my parents and grandparents had to enjoy heroes like Hopalong Cassidy, Marshal Dillon, The Lone Ranger, and others that allowed them to make believe and forget whatever might have been bothering them and whatever was bad in the world around them. That kind of hero had died out before I was born, living on only in the memories of those who came before. Thankfully, in some cases they also lived on in syndication. My babysitters as a child were Adam West and the rest of the cast of the '60s Batman show, which I watched every day for two years on FOX 18, the Charlotte affiliate, and for many days and years afterwards on my vhs of recorded episodes after we moved back to Georgia in 1992.

That's not to say I don't have my heroes. Most of them, though, are real life people, some dead, some living, who did or do real life things like drive race cars, play baseball, etc. My generation is devoid of the kind of heroes who allow us to tap that most beautiful asset God gave us: our imaginations.

With that, I hope you enjoy the song:

Re: Heroes

Did you have the Good Humor ice cream truck going door to door? I loved the Toasted Almond. :D

Yes, I remember the milk box by the back door. Ours was delivered by Hood, if I remember correctly... or was it A.C. Petersen?!? We also had a local bakery that delivered pasteries door to door. Good stuff.

Re: Heroes

Gee... our milk man came inside to deliver the milk! LOL He'd leave it at the porch if the door was locked... but back in the 70's, the milk man just came right in. :-) (( The company name was Foremost ))

Our poor milk man must have dreaded opening our door, as to wondering what pet would be out to get him. A big parrot ( who was out of her cage ) flew at him one time.... a cat chasing a hamster almost knocked him over.... a snake went slithering across the floor in front of him and a big dog actually knocked him down. He was a very good sport, liked our family... just wished us kids kept better track of loose animals.... hee hee hee. Gosh I haven't thought about all that in years! :-)

We never had the Good Humor Man... just plain old ice cream trucks. :-) Remember those red, white & blue, rocked shaped Popsicles? :-)

Re: Heroes

Oh, jerk my memory strings!

Hoppy was my man. Favorite saying: "Hoppy has more billits!" Yes, I did say "bill-its."

We had a 13" round screen black & white TV. Never missed an episode of Hoppy.

I don't remember the song, and my Trash 80 computer won't play it. I'll have to remember to try and play it on my kid's computer.

We weren't "rich" enough to have our milk delivered, and the ice cream trucks were blue and white Melody trucks.

Re: Heroes

hee hee hee... we seemed to have veered off the track here...LOL Talking about ice cream, milk delivery and Popsicles! LOL But it HAS been fun to read. :-)

To help get us back on track... here's a song & lyrics to it,.... :-) I saw this guy in concert - great show! :-)

Heroes

Tom Kimmel

Heroes, larger than life
Up on the screen, every night
On the late show,
Oh, what a great show

Heroes, under the gun
Fighting for justice,
For everyone, and we follow,
Where ever they go

Heroes, standing up tall
Taking their chances,
Risking it all
So you know
There'll always be heroes

Heroes, so good to know
So hard to find,
Sad when they go
Like the shadows,
On the high road

Heroes, ever on track
Never give up,
Never look back
Never lay low,
Never grow old

Heroes, right from the start
They fall in love,
Straight from the heart
So you know
They'll always be heroes

And in my heart I’m saying

Ride on, safe from all danger
Where have you been for so long?
I've been waiting for another star
To rise in my night again
And give us a reason
We all must carry on
Where have the heroes have gone?

Heroes, facing the fight
Calling for courage,
Trying to do right
When the dust blows,
And the light goes

Heroes, tried and true
One for the other,
Ready to do it tomorrow,
Like it was the last show

Heroes, put to the test
Keeping a promise,
Doing their best
So you know,
There'll always be heroes

And in my heart I’m saying

Ride on. safe from all danger
Where have you been for so long?
I've been waiting for another star
To rise in my night again
Give us a reason
We all must carry on

Ride on. safe from all danger
Where have you been for so long?
I've been waiting for another star
To rise in my night again
Give us a reason
We all must carry on

` ` ` ` ` ` `

NANA, post part of the song and I'll try to find it / them on utube for you, here. :-)

Nana, boy was this a tough song to find! LOL

The only place I can find where it plays - is this page.

Go to the bottom, to the player and press the " > " button to play. Happy memories, listening. :-)

Re: Heroes

Thank you so much, S14. I'm still trying, but I haven't been able to hear it yet. I glanced around for the specs. on the player but didn't see them. I'm guessing I don't have enough RAM. It has been trying to load for over half an hour. But I'll keep trying. And thank you again.
